Ta Tonka's new shoes

When i got my rig it had 175/70R15 snow tyres all round, and it has come time for their replacement.

After much searching around, I finally found some tyres in that size, with a decently aggressive tread, and they are en route all the way from DemonTweeks in the UK. In the mean time, a 165SR15 showed up on Ebay at the right price, so I snagged that.

It arrived last night, brand new, perfect condition Yokohama snow tyre.

Not sure what combination I will do, whether to put this on the front and have a spare rear, or to stud this up and chuck it on the rear for the winter, we'll see when the other three tyres arrive, and see if they will all fit.

Stoked to have some traction in the slippery stuff again!

Previous owner named it that, and somehow it seems to fit.

I got an email from DemonTweeks this morning - ten days after I placed my order, they have discovered that they don't have my tyres in stock, and have no restock date from their supplier.

Back to the drawing board ...!

Why not just put Vredestein Snow+ all the way around. They come in a 165. What size are those rims--4" or 4 1/2"? The 165's will work great.

On the other hand, if you want the 175's and are willing to lose a little bit of ride height, there's the Bridgestone Blizzak's in a 65 profile. You'd lose less than a half inch in ride height, and there's lots of other tire choices if you go to 65's.

My original plan, after doing a rallycross event last year and seeing all the bad ass tyres those guys have access to, was to put some gravel rally tyres on there. Of course, trying to get hold of them over here is proving to be difficult. I have no problem going down to a 165, that is what the above snow tyre is, but really want something a bit more aggressive.

These are the tyres I had ordered ... if only I could get them.

But will the tire fit on your & on the bike? The only reason I went with 165 80 15 was because of the rim size.A 70 series is wider & a little lower profile would be interseted if it fits....

There is a rally tire distributor online here in the U.S. - Sube Sports in Huntington Beach, California.

Far as I can tell, they carry three BF Goodrich rally tires in 175/70/15 and the one with the hardest rubber compound is this one--

But, gawd man, not only are they NOT street legal or DOT-certified, but they cost $250 each!!

I always liked the Mickey Thompson MT 2551 tire but I think they are just a little too wide for the GS. They are DOT legal though.

So far, all my attempts to source rally tyres in the right size has failed ... I am not giving up, but considering the state of my old tyres, needed some new rubber ASAP.

Ebay turned up a couple more SR15 snow tyres - bought both for $100, and picked the best one for the rear (it was unused NOS). So now I have three unmatched tyres on there. They'll do for now ....

Took it for a quick spin after I got it all back together, and in true comedy fashion, the LH header fell off. So now I am waiting for a funky special BMW tool for the header nut ...

I would look for a 165 for the front. It would handle a lot better on the street and there was a small tool kit that came with the sidecar that I thought had an exhaust wrench in it.

Anybody find one yet? That Nangkang I put on works good.But didn't get many miles on before the final drive took a shit..ButI'm still like to find some tread,putting together a spare tire for the GSA this winter.Then I'm ready for double duty...

Both those tyres are 165s, and I chose the one with the narrowest, most rounded profile for the front.

And thanks, Chris! As soon as I read that, I remembered seeing the wrench in with the tools, but didn't even think of it the other day! Now I feel like a tool for ordering another one ...
