Thanks, D-Stylz!
I'm glad you're enjoying it!
We had fun in your backyard.

Hey dvwalker -
thanks for the butterfly photos (that bottom one is pretty!).
Were you there in August?
That seems to be the month to see them.
Yep, Bearcat was closed (pics coming up).

Haha, thanks sion!

Day 51: 8/11/12 continued
Cranes Crossing to Christmas Valley, OR 263 miles

At first it looked like this rut was full of rocks...

But it was full of water and dead butterflies.

I tried to take more pics of live butterflies, but it was kind of bright.
As in dvwalker's pic, the white specks are butterflies.
You can make out some around the left side of the pic (along the edge of the road),
and around the top of the frame.

More specks.
Had I known this was so rare, I would have tried harder to take photos of the butterfly "snowstorm."
These are not very impressive...

Here we are - Seneca.

Here’s the front of the Bearcat Lodge - says “closed for the season.”

But the sign out front says something different.
For sale.

No more bobcats.

The woman at the gas station said the Bearcat has been closed since last fall.
I was looking at Trip Advisor and was surprised to see a recent review...but it was from someone who stayed there in 2011.

Got fuel.

Ooh, creepy!

Loaded up on sugar.

Tires.
Somewhere between 500-600 miles.

I wasn’t happy about this crack. Hope that doesn't become a problem in Xmas Valley!

Then it was back on the trail...
I missed a photo of the sign,
but the shooting range here was in use so we had to detour around it...
safety first!

Lots of nice roads today.

Sometimes the trail got faint, but it was still enjoyable.

Sometimes got rutty.

The road was kind of blocked here.
Not a great pic.
There was an opening on the left (behind the mirror), but not quite enough for our wide load.

This one little pokey piece was getting caught on our side bag.
Might as well break out the saw...

Yes, same route and direction as you guys but our timing was early Sept of 2011.

Perhaps this big butterfly hatch is an annual thing now with the warmer temps. During one of our gas stops someone mentioned they're Pine White Butterflies.

bummer bearcat is closed, goodbye bearcat lodge

yep, did you watch that OPB clip?

more butterfly info, from this website.

It sounds like after this year, those huge numbers won't be seen again for at least 20 years.
This article says maybe 30-40 years!

In other news, Radek is out of the Baja 1000.
He got hurt during pre-running.
Maybe a broken foot, plus a sprained ankle/knee.
Enough to keep him from doing a solo race.

We're so bummed. This really sucks!
But I'm glad he isn't hurt worse.
When things go bad on a 990, they go bad FAST.

Heal up, Radek!

I hope he at least hangs out in Baja for a while, enjoying the sunshine.
Lica happens to be in Baja, too. On his way to South America (hopefully)!
I hope they get to meet up...

Speaking of Baja, you guys have seen this one, right?

"....oh, and a rear tire."

Matt is screwed, I know all about baja so none of that stuff works on me.

OK, not sure if my next post will be ready tonight. If not, I'll see you guys in the morning.

Thanks for another amazing Wans report. I can't believe you can be riding out in the middle of nowhere & come across a campsite exactly when you need one. Really nice ones too. I sure can't do that on the roads....

Hi VFR, I'm happy you're still with us!
Well, it doesn't always work out that perfectly, but Oregon has lots of great camping.
British Columbia was good for that, too. Sometimes we got really lucky.

Good morning, Ladybug!

Oh, you get up so early!
I know I said I'd be back in the morning...
I'm just barely getting it done in time.
whoops.

Well, it's still morning in Hawaii!

Day 51: 8/11/12 continued
Cranes Crossing to Christmas Valley, OR 263 miles

When we left off, matt was sawing away on a part of the log that caught our bags...
All better!

This must be a real mess in winter...

Someone lost a sofa.
Looks like a great spot for movie night!

Oh, I know this place.
We did a little video here...

heh heh.

Last time, Norm sent us out across that meadow... Oh well. It worked out.

The roads were still nice...

But we were starting to notice a lot of smoke in the air.
It was getting pretty strong here.

In 2008, lots of the OBDR had been on fire, and matt had spent a great deal of time re-routing...

Out in the forest, it's always hard to tell exactly which way the roads are going.
Often times it feels like you're going in circles...

For a while, it seemed like we were going away from the smoke... OK, cool.

But other times, it felt like the tracks were taking us closer to the thick smoke.
Finally, we decided that it was getting too hard to breathe.

So, we let Norm re-route...

He had some trouble at first...

But then we got on a main road.
We surprised this cow. Sorry!

Tried to get a pic of these rocks.
After miles and miles of nothing but forest, they stood out.

The smoke in the valley was getting pretty dense.

That’s Delintment Lake down there. You can barely make it out...

Here’s how it was in 2010.

So, we missed the baby’s grave this year.
In avoiding the smoke, we skipped Delintment (and the road that goes past the grave).

We ran into a guy in a truck who told us that today was the opening of Antelope season.
While we were talking to the hunter, his little dogs were jumping around the cab and climbing all over him.
Then he mentioned that he had his loaded guns on his lap.
Yikes.

We thanked him and then took off before one of his dogs stepped on a trigger!

This was a super dusty road. We were leaving a huge cloud.

I was trying to get an over-the-shoulder photo of the dust. You get the idea...

Riley, here we come!

But "DTAS" - the things that came up from urban dictionary were a little...inappropriate?
