Last month I gave a client an updated invoice for extra's incurred during the renovation a house into two rental units. The invoice was for about $6k. They said we agree all the work was done but we'll pay you $4k. I raise a stink but it is what it is.

How much blood sweat and tears is it really worth to start some campaign against them, picket the house, tell the neighbours, get myself all worked up, yadda, yadda? ?

I'll learn a lesson and move on, there's enough stress in life ... especially for $500. IMO

Dan, if you did the work on that house and made a mistake that made the house uninhabitable, would you stand behind your work, or avoid the homeowner for months then belatedly offer a credit for next time? (I'm desperately avoiding QC construction industry jokes here).

I own a small business. If we screw up, we make it right. We don't make mistakes often, but sh*t happens. Dave admitted to me that they made a mistake. It's how we deal with mistakes that defines us as businessmen.

OTOH, if we get screwed by a customer, we can take a loss against profit and write it off on taxes. It doesn't make it right but it makes it a little less painful. We can also write off any legal costs in getting paid and we can lien their property. You can bet that if the work had been done and Anderwerks didn't get paid, there'd be a mechanic's lien on the bike. A retired person getting his bike fixed badly doesn't have the same opportunities but he can post his story on the Internet.

Finally, what lesson should the OP learn from this? Not to deal with Anderwerks? That they don't stand behind their work? If he learns those lessons, shouldn't he pass it on? As an Anderwerks customer, I hope that is not the lesson here.

I have read thru this thread several times. I agree that Anderwerks has dropped the ball on this, but I think that maybe it is about time to drop it. If the owner of the company is not willing to do anything about the issue that statifies the customer, then there are only 3 things the customer can do.
1. Take the business to small claims court - in this case, pretty hard to do, and would cost the customer more than the claim.
2. Let anyone and everyone know exactly what happened, and what the results were - This is called bad advertising and it is obviously working. Lots of people have found out and may think twice about dealing with this business.
3. Drop it. Sometimes it just isn't worth getting all worked up about, when you just know the company is not going to do a damn thing for you.

I had a bad experience with a company in Errington, BC (close to Parksville) that quite possibly could have taken my life. The fix cost me over $600 and loss of use of my bike for 2 weeks. I went back to the company and as the owner would not do anything for me, I make every one I talk with aware of the poor quality work done by this shop, and the fact that they do not stand behind their workmanship. If you live in the area, you will know the company by their barrage of constant advertising on Craigslist Nanaimo.

I know that I have steared many people away from this company and made many perople wary of dealing with them. That is probably the best and easiest way to deal with companies like this. Bad advertising by word of mouth, with real life examples, is the worst type of advertising any company can get.

I am very pleased to advise the forum members following this thread that today Dave Anderson sent me an Interac payment of the full refund of $574.80 and it is in my bank account as we speak.

Dave called me last week and we had a good discussion.
He stated he would stand behind his work and apologized for the length of time it took to get this matter resolved.
Dave came through at the end of the day and I thank him for that.
The matter is now closed as far as I'm concerned.

I would like to thank the forum members who made thoughtful comments on this thread and supported me in my efforts.
