Coat hangers will let you gas-weld mild steel to cast iron, though.

Your missing my point. You braze with brass, you weld steel. I know people gas weld with coat hangers, but unless you have a brass coat hanger, you don't braze with a coat hanger. BTW you can weld plastic with a plastic coat hanger!

Can be done, but it's harder with a torch than with an iron or a heat gun, carbon layer forms and keeps it from bonding

Also depends on the type of plastic, obviously...
