I hope I'm not too late to say this, but the guy who's truing your wheels needs to "set" the spokes prior to final tightening. There is a ridge on the head of each spoke that requires they must must be tapped into the hub or they will loosen up over time. More info here: http://agwalker.com/wheelbuilding.html

In the UK the hoop of rubber that covers the spoke heads and protects the tube is called a rim tape. You guys may call it something else though.

I've also read somewhere that using a steel wire brush on alloy can leave tiny fragments of wire in the alloy which then rusts and causes staining. The suggestion was to use a brass wire brush.

You really confused me when you wrote "I went out in the garage to prep the engine for swapping out the clutch water pump seal".I didn't know that /5's had water cooled clutches

My bad - the oil pump seal, of course!

As for the wire brush, the one I'm using is stainless - so no issues. Thanks for the comments!

Well damn it. I just wrote a page long update with photos and my browser shut down and I lost it all. Time for the abridged version.

I got the wheels back and started mounting tires. The rear was tough, the front better. I'm going back to the shop today to pick up a spacer and to have them finish the rear tire. I was afraid I was going to tear the bead on the last 10" or so. Should be a roller with picture proof this afternoon.

Started on the front this morning.

I cut the fingers off of some old leather gloves to help protect the shiny powder coating from my clumsy work:

And done!

I'm going back to the shop to pick up a wheel spacer that fell out of the hub, and also to have them finish up the rear tire install for me. It got to the point where I felt I was going to scratch the rim and I didn't want to do that.

Picture proof that she's a roller again coming this afternoon....

Thanks! Ha! The TV, BlackBerry, and the phone are easy to drown out. It's this distraction that takes a bit more work!

I set up her pink Christmas tree for her though, and she spent the next hour and a half decorating while I mounted the tires and we both watched cartoons in our pajamas.

Life is good!

I did indeed have the wheels back on yesterday, but my online photo hosting site (Photobucket) is acting up. Not sure what's going on, but I can't upload any pictures. I've never had this problem before, so I believe it is something wrong with their site.

I'm leaving in a few hours for Chicago for the weekend, so I'll just have to try again when I get back on Monday.

I hope you wiped 99.999% of that grease off your splines! That's WAY too much, it will sling off and grease your drums.

+1 and I should add I know this because I personally did this once. Not only does the grease get on the break shoes but it makes a mess every where.

Thanks guys. I had not wiped off the excess grease, but I will now. I subscribe to the "if some is good and more is better, then too much must be just right" school of thought when it comes to grease, but I see the error of my ways in this instance.

This is one of the reasons I post such detailed and mundane photos - so you inmates can set me straight when I make mistakes!

Glad we caught it. Another thing, not any grease will do. BMW has a special type for this, and I've heard people use "Honda Moly" , same stuff for the transmission splines. You want to clean the part really well, spread on a tiny amount of lube and wipe off the excess. I use Q-tips to get in the hard to reach areas.

Wow, that is indeed a lot of grease! I'll just add for no good reason that I used about 1 percent of that amount on my clutch splines, and it was too much and caused it to slip.
