It's a bit of a "how long is a piece of string" question, but in your collective experience, how long should I expect the needle bearings to last? Bike has a full service history, regular oil changes, I have never really ridden it hard... For long anyway.
Also what would be the typical signs of them approaching the end of their life? I have a r100rs 79 with about 81k miles on the clock.. It has the plastic spacers at the end of the rocker arms so I assume at some point the original ones were changed. (basing that assumption on what I am reading above).. I suppose what I am getting at, is should I consider replacing them as a maintenance task or should I just leave alone? Apologies to hijack the thread but you all got me thinking... Thanks, Byron

How long do they last? It's all over the map. Keeping the endplay at a minimum helps but it is not a cure all. I don't worry about them but I check them every time I have the rocker arms off for some reason. I replace them all when I am doing a valve job. I replaced them all when I put my sport cam in 70k miles ago and again now that I just got a valve job. I had one break this last time I checked at 70k miles. It got into the shaft a bit too.
