I've ran the Kenda 270's before and I used to like them, but they are either a love or hate relationship. The biggest problem with them is that their side knobs are soft and flex when you get over on them on pavement, so this can make the tires seem squimry. It's definitely worse on larger bikes, but still affects even the smaller XT's.

Since I have found the Shinko 244's, I won't run the Kenda's again. They are almost direct copies of the Kenda 270's and are cheaper to buy, but they redesigned the side knobs to be more substantial and they don't flex like the 270's do. A win/win!! Their beefier knobs gives them a more sure footed feel when you get over on the side knobs in the twisties.

Here's a direct comparison of both tires. That is a Shinko 244 on the left and Kenda 270 on the right. You can see the larger side knobs which I cannot bend with my finger where I can on the Kenda's. You can also see the knobs just in a bit from the sides are also a bit larger on the Shinko's and go all the way to the edge every 2 knobs which gives you more stability there too.

A well worn Kenda 270 on the right and a new Shinko 244 replacement on the left

A close up of the side knobs. See those little bitty side knobs. That is what makes the kenda 270's so squirmy. They give so easily.

I just mounted a Shinko 244, after reading this post. It has great traction, but feels a little looser on the really tight paved curves compared to the IRC GP-1 I had last. Most people probably wouldn't notice it, but I live in a very mountainous area. This is a great tire for the riding I do. The price is great too.

Oh well. No leaks now.
That's EXACTLY what I did this summer. Please let Moose Racing know if you haven't already. When I did they said it's the first such report they'd ever had. They bent over backwards to ship me replacements (twice thanks to US Post Office nazis). Moose cares. Let 'em know so they can fix a systemic problem. Thanks. :)

IMHO: ultimate dual-sport tire on small bikes.

My 225 (2003, 5000 miles) was stolen this morning at 6:45 am in Huntington Beach, Ca. My neighbor awoke to some noise and went out to inspect and heard "hurry up, someone's here" in Spanish.. He two hispanics age 20-30 in a red mid 90's toyota pickup with a campershell speeding off. They left a big piece of wood and a 6 ft bike ramp in their hurry.

Let me know if you see parts popping up.

I'm in San Diego and will keep my eyes open... Chances are it is in Mexico by now... If I see any parts come up locally I will let you know. Do you know the last six of the VIN by any chance?

Making a XT more secure at P&R?

Sorry to hear about your stolen XT.

It brings up a question. How do you make a motorcycle more secure at a public transit park and ride lot, where it will be sitting in the open for eight hours? Will it fit in one of those big bicycle lockers they rent out?

Damn. Sorry to hear. I've got one just like that, the best year. You mind sharing how it was secured, where it was stored so we can learn from what didn't work?

I HATE thieves.

Good news, it was recovered a few hours later. A few scratches, but it's all there.

The theives left a large desktop and a 6 ft ramp. They took swab samples for DNA, but told me that it probably won't produce anything. A few hours later, I got a call that said they found the bike behind a liquor store. The CSI told me they swabbed the bike and I was free to go. Upon mounting the bike, I noticed blood on the left handlebar. The CSI said he missed that and swabbed it. If his DNA is in the system or if it comes up in the future, he will have grand theft to deal with. My neighbor saw them both and can identify them.

Half the time, I park it in a very secure area. the other half of the time, it is outside, in what I thought was a secure area, all the way back of our apartment complex. You cannot see it from the street, and only a few people know it's there.

The theives were either regular bike theives or they were tipped off by someone that the bike was there (I'm thinking it was the landscaping crew). They came prepared (with the bike ramp) or they always carry it looking for opportunities.

They made a lot of noise, which made my neighbor check out what was going on. This makes me believe they are not "pros." Also, I don't think pros steal 2003 XT 225's, just saying.

They pushed the bike around another corner to conceal themselves better. From there they loaded the bike. A fork lock/steering lock might have deterred them from pushing the bike. But ultimately, locking the bike to something would have been a better deterrent.

In the OC, bike thefts are common. Four guys, with a pair of 2x4's can lift any bike into a van or truck.

The PD tells me that when the fog rolls in like it did the last few days, bike thefts and break-ins occur more often.

They also said they see a lot of bike thefts during the holidays. So lock them down.
