This came in today's mail. Should work great for relocating the battery up under the seat pan. I'm making a little tray for the battery and other electronics. This brand of Li battery has the charger/balancer electronics built into the case. No futzing around with special chargers and balancers...

Two-year warranty, and the re-seller is an inmate here -- herrhelmet, over in vendors. Reports so far are all good. Placing the electronics right in the box is a brilliant move and, IMO, takes away a lot of the failure outcomes of these batteries.
The main downside is that this battery is pretty much for starting and running the bike. You don't want to, say, charge your GPS overnight or inflate a big camping mat without the bike running.

Choices...The bottom pic is the way the bike is now, with upturned mufflers. But, I'm thinking they might look better flat, matching the line of the rear rack. They work better flatter, insofar as turn signals, etc. need to be set up. What thinks this band of experts...?

I could see the flat option with them about 4" lower...just below the top of the tire...would really show off the fender and still be well out of the way of rocks.

Definitely prefer the turned up option..
, but are you going to take luggage? If so you need to think about how that will work. The turned up look shouts dirt bike. The lower says I'm just another old road bike

I'll be making oval side racks, to fit Wolfman bags. The mufflers can work either way, since the racks will be outside them.
I need to keep staring at it. Right now, I like them upturned.

I've got low on my GS and hate it. Buggers up ground clearance. Your lowest point isn't the sump. It's just in front of the rear wheel..

Just for Looks
From a purely aesthetic perspective, upturned is better. And if you can run it with only 1 can, I think it makes the bike tidier overall and is more consistent with the 70s (I think).

Will this bike run good with one 1-1/2" muffler or would I need to go to 2" (after the 2-into-1 merge pipe)?

Either position looks good to me, not much help I know
A single 1 1/2 muffler will flow fine for up to around 150hp, so you should be OK for now
