Just purchased - '07 F650 GS Dakar, now for some advice!
Hi Guys and Girls,
After riding my Husky 450SMR for 3 years, I had decided that the road was not for me. I managed to get hold of an '07 Dakar, with 20,000K's on the clock, to cut my teeth with. So far I have put Dunlop 606's, chain/radiator guards and bar risers to make it abit more offroad friendly. My riding companion is my brother who has just splurged on a '12 KTM 690 EnduroR. Basically, I am carrying about 40-60 more Kilo's than him (in bike weight) and was wondering what people might have done to make their Dakar's a more dirt oriented bike!?. I have so far failed miserably in the sand and have just gotten used to loose gravel but am keen to push the limits more and more (providing the bike is up for it). My q's would be: 1. Any ways to lighten the Dakar? Have heard removing the ABS takes a few kilo's out..but seems silly to me!? 2. Mods to add to my bike that will aid in my offroad adventures. Any advice from people with the same passion is what I am after, so feel free! Im all ears . Cheers. |

![]() You'll get used to it with more riding time on it and you'll be showing that pesky brother on his 690 a few things I'm sure. bits |

The most common mod is to install USD forks, usually from a Yamaha WR or YZF. A few of the more hardcore dirt riders put their bikes on diets, including dumping the ABS system. There is a massive Dakar thread as well as a Yamaha fork thread here, crack open a beer or three and have at it.
