Turn your KTM950 into AWD in 3,4,5,??? easy steps

I wonder how difficult stuffing a KTM 690 engine into the 450 DS would be. If it would fit would it be easier to do than modifying the 690 to have AWD? Seems like the steering head and gearbox was a huge job on the 950. But then to fit the 690 in the DS chassis would probably require gearbox modification anyway. Its kind of hard sitting here with neither bike for reference. Its all just speculation... I should probably just get a 450 DS and farkle it out.

I feel sticking with the 690 frame and configuration would be easier than doing an engine swap and then an AWD add on.

You have to remember, this was the First AWD kit I added to a bike. Once I had the fixtures and jigs and new parts designed and made it went smooth. Just would need to figure it out for a new bike.

I took a harder look at the frames of both and came to the same conclusion. It would be a shame not to use that nice chromoly trellis beauty anyways.

One of the Honda 450R we had run was about 50 HP, not so far off considering this is a 450 X based engine with smaller valves and lower compression for longer life.

I just found this thread today. It's a real bummer since I was only an hour or two away from Mukwonago on the 10th. Amazing work on this build.

Have you ever taken the rear wheel drive chain off just to see what a front wheel drive bike feels like?

Seriously though, I'd love to see build pics of the metal tanks. I would buy another 990 just to have the OD green bike setup. Looks like something Mad Max would have loved.

I'm working to have a few AWD product upgrades in production for our return from Europe in July.

Upon our return, hope to swap the new components onto the 950 ADV. Take a test ride around WI one weekend. Then beat the heck out them in CO for the KTM National CJD tech Rally Ride. Evaluate and continue testing through the fall.

If all passes, I hope to start cutting more frames winter of 2013/2014. Fingers crossed.

Maybe head down to Mexico with the AWD 950 SE to test everything out the next spring!
