VN1700 and an old HRD Attempt

I have an 09 Kawasaki VN1700 that I am attempting to fit an old HRD sidecar to, it is a double sidecar so the fit will be a tight squeeze to stay within the 1850mm requirement.
The sidecar and frame have been restored by the previous owner and seem in great shape.


Ron Hurdis made me a double classic that went on a VN1500, great bike that went along with a house and some other stuff.


This will be #5, and the first I will be attaching myself.

As a NSW resident it will be a bolt on job as ANY welding requires an engineers certificate.

So let the fun begin, I am collecting various parts at the moment that I think I will need to start fabrication.

Any advice or comments are most welcome, type slowly so I can take it all in.

What model is the blue sidecar on the 1500? I have seen another one of those on a Harley FLH in this forum somewhere. Thanks, Dave

Sean, you bastard! Is that the HRD that was on Ebay recently? I was looking at that for the Strom.

it was out Bathurst way, the guy had pretty much restored both the body and chassis,
when he bought it, it had been advertised as a 1 1/2, when he got it home he realised it was to big for his guzzi.

I was surprised there was not more bidding, he said there were 37 some "lookers"

Anywho It's mine for now, been busy making metal filings all day.

That will turn out nice , but this being ADV' an all ... we're gonna need pic's for proof of this metal filings business


What does the track roughly measure out to at the moment ?

I am right at the limit of 1850, but there is some room to move.

top front mount

bare frame tube, as this is so close to the top of the frame I think I can get away without bracing it across to the frame on the other side. ?

lower front under floorboards both sides

top rear


All the shackles are the thick type used for box trailer axles and I am using 2mm pipe sleeve's around the bike frame.

Lower rear mount off main engine mounting through bolt

I think I will also secure the cross brace to the frame making 4 points of support in total, overkill probably but better that than not enough.

Are you saying the track is 1850 or that is the overall width ?

over all width, edge to edge I am right on 1850, I thought the U clamps would have caused more of a stir?

I will use them for the upper rear mount, not to crazy about that but the way I have in mind should be ok.
There is a very small section of frame where there is no room to move, 4 bolt style clamps would be to bulky to fit so I will weld some 1/2 sleeve tubing to the U clamp to prevent any slippage and spread the load a little.
I found a suitably qualified engineer here on the central coast which is handy for certification, just waiting on some more parts to arrive for the 1" nominal heavy tube, (tube adapters, kind of threaded slug you weld in the end of the tube) which will hold the threaded rod/clevis.

Interesting , looking at the pic's I would have guessed more than that. My electra glide comes in at 1750 with a 48" track and I find that to be a bit wide in town.


Met a bloke years ago in Kyogle who had a djp mounted to an R75 bm' with exhaust clamps ... he seemed happy enough

The postman delivered some tube adapters today, threaded slugs that fit inside tubing allowing for adjustment.

I had a local shop bend some 1" nominal heavy tube for me. I just need to attach the top bracket and cut to fit leaving room for a clevis.


The clevis's or clevii should arrive this week then I can do a final mock up and test ride I hope.

Does anyone have advice on hydraulic handbrake systems? I have a disc on the sidecar wheel, thought I could use it for a handbrake (as required here in NSW)

Will the chair have its own master cylinder and pedal or share off one of the bikes systems ?
