165 Average cruising speed. Man, that's a hell of a pace to keep up. Maybe he was confused with MPH and KM's on the dial?

LOL!

FYI, on Friday I'm getting into it...upgrading the alternator, new clutch pushrod seal & shifter shaft seal, new fork seals. Can't wait!

But looking at that ad, it could very well be an XS1, just with a disc brake upgrade up front.

Do it to a '79 or later Special, but not one of the early ones.

Good XS650's are getting hard to find because everyone wants to make a cafe, streettracker, or bobber out of one. Nicely done they're ok, but too many hacks out there ruin a very nice original example.

soldierguy got a fairly well done bike....I'd change a couple of things, but minor stuff.

The only way to know for sure is to look at the left exhaust valve cover.

The XS-1 and 1B were kick only, and had the three sided valve covers all four places.
When the e-start came out, it came with a compression release (automatic) that opened the left exhaust valve - those had a four-sided cover that remained all throughout the years of production, even after the e-start stopped using the compression release.

I just learned two things from your post! Thanks!

I learned about why the one valve cover on mine is 4-sided. I also learned (or really was reminded) that I'm mildly retarded...I went out to the garage to look at mine, when there was a pic just above your post CLEARLY showing my left-side valve cover.
