My 1999 KLR has 62,000 miles with no engine work needed. I replaced the doo hickey (original was still fine) and changed a couple of valve shims, but that is it. It does not burn any oil, but it is rarely at highway speeds.

The biggest number I've personally seen on a KLR odo--this is Fireplug's bike, at "TreeFest" in Sneads FL earlier this year:

I have an 07 i bought new, now at 40K+ Runing full synthetic since first oil change, oil and filter change every 5K. Never needed to add oil between changes. I flog it in the woods, on the road down to Copper Canyon and back, up to Mt Washington a couple times. Flog on! She loves it

i have a 91 and 2001 both with about same mileage 33k both died same miserable death , ran lean ,got hot, fried exaust cam and bearing caps .. And you cannot just replace cam bearings you have throw away whole head ..because the caps and head are built as one unit and the caps do not use replaceable bearings what a retarded design ...
so instead of being able to adjust cam runout with a bigger sized bearing it has to be thrown away completely ... Thats retarded ... |

Mine has about 30k on the clock. I bought it as a non running project bike.
http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=699117 The PO was a dickhead that never adjusted the valves. He didn't do the doo until it chunked it at 12k, fixed the doo, but never even cleaned the oil screen. He just rode it until it wouldn't run anymore. I got it and fixed it for not a lot of money. Oh yeah, he also cracked the frame too. I fixed that too. ![]() It now runs like a champ. That motor and bike are really impressively tough. Considering what the PO did, it has no right to be alive right now.

And as for the retarded design, lotsa Jap bikes don't use replaceable cam bearings, and still somehow manage to be reliable and long-lasting. Like Honda's air-cooled XR/XLs for example. Ya gotta keep oil in 'em though.

Just 6000 miles on my 2009. I bought it in February with 2100 on it and have been gone for 4 months since then, and out of work for the last 2 months. My new commute will be 55 miles per day, so the miles will be going on a bit quicker... if the contract negotiations ever finish and I can finally start earning a paycheck!

2009 KLR 650 - current mileage 25,599 miles
8,898 miles for this year's riding season. Couple years ago I made 10,000 in one season. Sorry I did not beat my current best high score this year, was busy with moving I guess ![]() ![]()

The Honda RFVC head bikes ( XRL, XR, XL) have run roller bearing cams since 1983. The previous design ran the cam directly in the head material though. The Suzy DR650 runs the cam directly in the head material and I don't believe I've ever heard of a cam journal failure with one of them.

My 01 is just a pup at 18xxx. It's pretty cool to see all the big numbers some of these bikes go.
But it never fails to amaze me that people still question doing the Doo just cuz theirs was OK when swapped. There have been so many documented Doo failures it's a must in my book. For the record mine had 12,000 on it when I bought it and did the Doo and the whole top of it was broken off. Thanks Eagle Mike for all the hard work you Doo :-) |
