The Yamaha Super Tenere XT1200Z Big Thread

I have been reading this forum for several months now. I started reading this thread about three weeks ago. You guys have inspired me. I work 50 hours a week and commute 15. I want to do something fun. I have been riding since I was about 15. I love motorcycles and anything with wheels that says Yamaha. Its been a while since I have swung a leg over the seat. I told the wife about it and at first she didnt want me to do it. The father in law over heard our conversation and told her, "let the man have his motorcycle". She called me back and said,"You know what we wont get any younger, get it!" With a beautiful wife and three boys its hard to fork out 12-13k. I've been waiting for the right time. Looks like Christmas boys...... Here she is.....

Im in a similar boat- Beautiful wife & 3 boys, 50 mile commute in a V8 Toyota Tundra. I could pay for the bike just in gas savings alone.
Fun factor is just icing on the cake.

I want a video of him getting it off of the center stand!

I made the mistake of putting my pig (not a Yamaha) up on the center stand to get the last few drops of fuel into the tank, that was an adventure to get back down on a slippery piece of concrete by the pumps!!!

These are really REALLY starting to grow on me. Maybe if my current ride ever craps out I'll look into replacing it with one of these...

Sorry, but I have to laugh. Seems to me if you want glass-smooth you'd be buying a four- or six-cylinder touring bike, and most of those come with gear indicators - though I still don't why anyone would want, or need, a gear indicator. Maybe I've just been riding too long, but folks, you have no idea what "vibration" is until you've ridden some 1960's and '70's British parallel twins, or any American V-twins... Lots of Italian mounts, too. And none of 'em had gear indicators that I can remember, either. And there were lots of Jap twins that buzzed like paint shakers, too.

To each his own, but as already been pointed out, seems to me perhaps a big twin dual-sport might not be the right choice of motorcycle if you are expecting glass smoothness. And the only manufacturer I can think of right now that is using any sort of rubber engine mounts is Harley-Davidson, and that's only on certain model lines. The rest use solid mounted, counterbalanced engines.

Of course, I don't have my Super Tenere just yet, but I'm not expecting it to be as smooth as a Gold Wing. I'm expecting it to have a few vibes here and there, just like my XR1200 and my Hypermotard, not to mention my parallel twin, counterbalanced Versys.

At this point I'm with the folks who say maybe you should just relax your grip on the bars a bit... Needless to say, YMMV.

Have to disagree. After spending 55,000 km aboard a TDM900, which was very smooth and vibration free at all cruising speeds, loping along like you'd expect a big twin, I took my first ride on its big brother the S10 this weekend, racking up 2000 km, and was pretty bummed out to be getting numbed hands at 3500 rpm/100 kph -- a lowly 60 mph. And it didn't get less obtrusive if I went faster. This engine feels like a busy, buzzy inline 4, not a relaxed big twin. Maybe the crossplane design, I don't know. But it was pretty disappointing after the TDM and other big twins I've owned.

Well, first off, riding an S-10 with only 1,250 miles on it is hardly telling. As many, many owners have noted, myself included, the big Yamaha only gets smoother and smoother as it piles up the miles. I remember mine going through a rather dramatic "smoothing out" transition in the 3,000 to 5,000 mile stretch (4,800 to 8,000 km)... And it has only gotten smoother since then.

But again, as said in the February 2011 (man, oh man, that was reaching waaaaaaaaaay back! ), I never expected my Super Ténéré to be glass-, Gold-Wing-smooth... Not with pistons flying up and down the size of coffee cans. and let's not forget that it has a third-again more displacement than your ol' TDM. That's a sizable difference. Like I said, you have no idea what "twin vibration" is until you've ridden a '60's or '70's H-D Sportster, or a '60's British vertical-twin...

Give the big S-10 a few miles and see if your opinion changes. I think it will.

8 cases is noteworthy but i think it is easier to load if you use milk crates





its easier to get it off the centerstand than it is to get it back on when you stop... you might need some co2 for a big keg party also.



or a keg of Sam



sometimes you might need to carry a sheet of durock or a roll of tar paper and some PVC





or a sub panel or shelving





or take your dog to the groomer






i have also carried couple bags of concrete, 2 bundles of shingles, or a roll of 6 foot chain link fence. a very versatile bike

I have to agree with Dallara 100%. Give the engine time and it will smooth out. When I first bought mine last year, the vibes were killing my feet and hands. I had ridden motorcycles with every type of engine known to man prior to the S10; boxer twin, singles, V four, inline four, etc.. None of them bothered me the way this thing did. I didn't expect an inline twin to be glass smooth but I also didn't expect my hands and feet to tingle and buzz for hours after riding either. I freely admit that I whined and bitched extensively here. I even got Yamaha customer relations involved. The recurring advice I got from others was to give it time. This motor takes a looooong time to break in. That was the only thing that kept me going. Initially, instead of wanting to ride my new bike I had to force myself to ride it. I'm glad I did though. As the miles accumulated, the bike became smoother. At 13k miles and counting, I'm happy to say that my S10 is a completely different machine. It still has that big twin "character" that I wanted but it no longer feels like I'm riding a giant sex toy.
