....true, the GS handles well - Suzook did a good job copying the Kawasaki engine - then made a better job with the handling

Two completely different Eras in bikes so not a fair comparison.
This is what Kawasaki had in 1979 top compete with the GS S....



The ELR was out in 1982 and by then Suzuki had the GS1100E which would spank the ELR. Now I must say I am a ELR fan but just wanted to add the info.

Yeah Suzuki pretty much admit to copying the original Kawasaki 4 cyclinder engine. They got caught napping with the 2 strokes while Honda and Kawasaki were well on their way with the CB and Z1. I find it hard to pick between the two manufacturers, the GS1000 and Z1000 are great bikes.

In the garage. Had it since new. Now at about 78,000 miles. I've been through the bottom end once, and the top end twice. GS1100 swingarm, old Yoshimura exhaust, Derale oil cooler, Wiseco 1085 pistons as of about 5,000 miles ago (had a Yoshimura 1100cc kit earlier), Falicon crank, 29mm smoothbore carburetors, old Yoshimura stage 1 cams, ported head, Dyna electronic ignition, braided stainless brake lines, and other stuff I'm not remembering right now. I need to get in there and replace the valve guide seals...

I have been looking everywhere for a gs1100e to add to the garage and found this beauty last week. Unmolested, 29000kms. Nice!

They were 1100cc in Canada. Toured through the Black Hills of South Dakota on this one.

Oh man, all these great looking GS classics makes me want to dig my 78 GS1000C out of storage and get it back on the road. Mine has less tha 10k on it. I got it back in 84 as a salvage bike for $700. Had to tear the engine down to the crank because the starter ring gear was shattered and it chewed up the bearing on the crankshaft.

First engine I ever took apart and got back together and running. I slotted the camshaft sprocket holes so I could dial in the cams. Opened the airbox, tweaked the exhaust, aluminum swingarm from a GS750, twin discs in the front with S/S braided lines, even modified a Hannigan fariing to fit it. Need a set of 1st over rings for it though.

Still is, always will be a Japanese "big-bore" classic!
