Oil Filters

Can anyone tell me if the oil filters used on the 1200GS and on the 800GS are the same thing?

I see that the parts numbers differ but are they structurally different?

Just checking 'cos I just got a new 1200 for myself and an almost new 800 for my wife and I will do my own maintenance.

Im guessing they are different since you are taking about a huge engine size different.

Simple answer, no they're different.

Long answer, they're almost the same. The F filter has the same diameter and thread as the R but is shorter. The taller filter has more filter capacity and holds more oil. The R filter will go on the F bike just fine so long as the extra height doesn't hit the bash plate and you'll have to add a bit more oil. The K1300 bikes came new with a short filter and could be changed sorta easy. A bulletin changed it to a tall filter and more oil. This meant removing the sidestand in order to change it out.

K&N lists the same filter for both your bikes. If your dealer is fussy then buy the right BMW filter till the warranty runs out.

BTW, it's the same with my mowers. Two Kohler engines and one B&S. I use all tall filters since clearance isn't a problem. Why stock both? (Do they have mowers in the UAE?)
