Towing in Cal.
I'll be towing my bike to L.A. from Idaho this Sunday.
I'm reading that the max speed limit for vehicles towing trailers is 55mph. Is that for real and is it being enforced ? Max

I've been towing trailers around LA a lot lately. I've gotten away with 60. Sometimes 65. Never more than that.
Haven't gotten a ticket yet. |

Hey Mark, whats up with the snow in SV?
I tow the bike(s) up every year from CA , 65 is my max till I hit NV! If there are 3 or more lanes in your direction I would stay in the right 2 lanes, it is/used to be a law prohibiting towing vehicle in those lanes. I try to stay out of L A as much as possible, so hopefully this will bump to someone down south. |

This Sunday you may be able to hit 25mph within 300 miles of L.A. if you're lucky.
Take food and water for the time you'll spend stopped on the freeway.

Don't go over 63 mph and u should be ok. The law in California is slow lane is for towing and the very next line is for passing only. If a cop wants to he can and will pull u over for being in the passing lane to long.

Thanks,
I think I'll hang in Lost Wages Sunday night. I really don't do well in stop and go traffic. I'll roll into the shipper Monday AM. The Snow on the upper 1,000 ft of the mountain is as good as it get's below that ice. We need more cold weather (snow making) or a big dump. Max

Keep it around 60 and you'll be fine, as most semi's drive 60-65. And you can drive in the right 2 lanes ONLY. If it's a 2 lane hwy, use either lane. Now it's time for a nice cold

Was towing a U-Haul up I-80 and CHP pulled me over for speeding. I wasn't aware that the truck speed limit applied to personal vehicles towing trailers. He let me off since I had an out of state plate (CO). It was a slow trip from Auburn to Reno.

Yeah it sucks but it really is 55mph, they do enforce it, and trucks/autos with trailers right 2 lanes only. That being said...you can usually get away with going up to 60 or so, 65 maybe since youre only towing a motorcycle. Kind of depends on what kind of mood the cops are in that day.

Trailers prohibited to right-most two lanes
Do watch out for this situation, particularly when multi lane freeways merge. Daughter was driving a UHaul with trailer; had been in middle lane of 3 lane road; another road merged from right; traffic was stop and go but she wound up being in the 3rd lane from the right when LEO got to her and pulled her over. He had no sympathy. Was at least $80.

Crap. Somebody should tell Colleen. She has pulled her show trailer in the car-pool lane doing 80mph!
