Need some HELP from the collective genius of this site

Here's the deal... '07 990 adventure with about 33k miles. Never had any problem with the bike but today I went to do some riding and could not get the bike to start. Basically I turn it on and hear the normal "hiss" of the fuel pump and all is good. However, when I hit the starter it makes a noise like it is cranking just one time (just err, not err...err...err hopefully that makes sense) and then kind of resets. Basically I then hear the fuel pump "hiss" again like it does when you hit the switch to turn it on. At first I thought the battery was dead even though it is always on a battery tender. So we tried to jump start the bike and I got the same thing. The battery is a few years old but like I said has always been on a tender and has been absolutrely problem free till today. Kind of sounds like my starter but I haven't heard much of them being a problem.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Jim

1. Battery
2. Battery
3.... Battery
4. or dirty and/or loose terminals and/or failed battery

the 990 will "unlatch" the safety systems and disable the starter if the battery voltage drops too low...

Dead battery.

It is dragging down the jump starter battery, I bet if you disconnect your battery and try jump starting again it will start up straight away.

I'll agree, a OEM battery with a few years on it might be toast. I got about 5 years out of mine.

But I'll add another thing as well. From AdvGA picture check the connector between the spare and main fuse, does it look corroded? Clean up and maybee even replace the starter relay and a new plug.

Cheers,
Zappa

I THINK I have a good battery??

Thanks guys...

Finally got a chance to check it out tonight and I think I have a good battery. Removed the battery from the bike (tested out of the bike @ 12.5v for what that's worth) and tried to start it with my jumper battery hooked up directly to the leads that connect into the battery. It does the same thing. I also pulled the starter relay thing all apart and everything is very clean in there. No signs of corrosion anywhere.

Here is some video of me trying to start it with the jumper battery. The first time I just hit the battery shortly and the second time is me holding it in for a bit,

Open for suggestions.
Thanks,
Jim

Try putting the battery back in and watching the voltage while cranking. If it drops much below 10 vdc while cranking the ECU will unlatch the safety systems and disable the starter......

If it shows good, then start going through ALL of the major electrical connections and verify that they are clean and tight.

Ok, I hooked the battery back up and when I would crank it over it consistently dropped below 10v. So I am thinking bad battery... So I removed the battery again and hooked up some jumper cables directly to the battery leads from my running truck. When I turned it over it was exactly the same as in the video. So I am not sold I truly have a bad battery but feel I might. However maybe I have two problems since I cannot get it to turn over hooked straight up to my truck. There is obviously something else going on. Right?

Just hoping there might be some other thoughts before I start going through the electrical connections. Since I am better with mechanical parts than I am with electrical parts and that's not saying much.
Thanks all,
Jim

You don't want your Car/Truck Running when you Jump Start a Cycle:

Here are some other Wiring Connections to look at:

I still think your Battery is Bad and may have a Shorted Cell that may not allow even a good jump.

IT is possible to have a battery that reads good voltage but with a bad cell is unable to provide the amps necessary to start the bike.

You can always take it to a parts store the load tests batteries to see if that is the case. Call around and fine one that has a replacement in stock so if it is bad two birds one trip.

I had to jump my KTM A990 the other day, have one of those high powered car charger deals that cam pump out 225 cranking amps. I set it the thing to do a 20 amp change. Fired up immediately.

One thing to keep in mind is I have totally removed my bikes battery and jumpered my bike to my trucks battery (which starts my truck just fine) and I get the same thing as in the video above. So that tells me I have a problem independent to a bad battery.
Or am I over simplifying this?
I do believe my battery may be bad but I also believe something else is going on as well.
Thanks,
Jim
