Alpe Huesli - little help please
I just bought a swiss chalet style mountain cabin with a plaque on the front saying Alpe Huesli, which I think means Little Mountain House. I have not had any luck in translating it exactly from internet sources. The best I can find is Alpe Husli. Is this Swiss German? Is the plaque spelled wrong? Can someone help me out and tell me the exact dialect and translation?
Thanks in advance. |

It's Swiss German.
I don't know if the "dialect" is any more specific/ local than Swiss German. See: http://www.forvo.com/word/h%C3%BCsli/ The spelling "Huesli" is equivalent to "Husli." English (and now even some German) keyboards change the original German Hüsli (with a German umalaut--2 dots over the letter U, or any vowel) into UE, to indicate that the original spelling was with an umalaut. Most English keyboards don't have/ can't display the German umalaut. See also http://www.schwarzwald-tourismus.inf..._museum_huesli and several other links with a google search. http://www.destinationleavenworth.com/destinations/108/ "Das Husli is...A slightly Americanized version of the Swiss-German name meaning “cute little house,” enjoy your cabin CourtFisher screwed with this post 11-15-2012 at 06:23 PM |

Yes, it is "Cute littel Alpine Hut"...
....and everybody's envy you for that, a bit more or a bit less, mainly depending where it is and how it looks:-)
So, pics?

Thanks everyone
![]() The "cute little mountain hut" is in Lake Tahoe. Hard to read but the sign on the upper deck says Alpe Huesli and under it is a coat of arms type plaque that says Basel on it. The house needs paint so I have been researching color schemes to bring out and celebrate the chalet style which I like. Gregg Wannabe screwed with this post 11-19-2012 at 09:50 PM |

You say that like it's a bad thing
You're only being snoopy if it's a private matter*. Painting it on the side of a building pretty much negates any thought of privacy. What you're doing is investigating history - and anyone who affixes a coat of arms to a building is more than likely willing (and eager) to bend your ear for a few hours. * or you're dancing on top of a doghouse
