When I buggered up a spark thread, it cost me all of 15 to get a timesert fitted.

You do need to take the head off, otherwise there is a much better chance that the whole job will go wrong, budget on replacing the head gasket and you will need to replace the cylinder base Orings as well with a smear of Yamabond gasket seal, or you will end up with a leaking cylinder base.
