And the planning begins.....

It took me about 100 hours to fully plan out and map the 2012 CAM1k, After spending about an hour on the maps, I am realizing that I have my hands full. I desire to find a loop through Colorado that is 95% dirt and at least 80% unique from the 2012 route.

Here are some initial thoughts.....on areas that I want to route through.

1. Spend some time in the Collegiates/Taylor Park area.
2. Make a big loop through the Rio Grande National Forest.
3. Ride the Flattops north of I25, scirting around the wilderness area.
4. Possibly ride some of the BLM north of Grand Junction, including the Roan Cliffs area.
5. A return trip to the San Juans to tackle the big passes.....but do them backwards from 2012.


With the 2012 route, I had riden about 80% of the route. The way 2013 is shaping up....I have only done about 50%. I figure I will have to make at least three scouting trips once spring time rolls around to verify trails, accessibility and difficulty levels.

I will begin to share the days as I build them. Once I get them all finished, I will post them on the #2 post.

To ride 1,000 miles in six days, we need to average 166 miles per day. Day one totaled 165 miles on the GPS.

I also need to mention that these routes are subject to change, based on further research, advice and/or scouting trips.


Departure: Apex Motor Sports, Colorado Springs Colorado
Head out of town toward Monument, Colorado
From Monument, up Mt. Herman Road to Rampart Road
Rampart Road north to Road 67 to the North Platte River
Then west to Deckers and up Stony Pass Road to Wellington Lake and to Bailey
A 15 mile highway run to Webster, Colorado....then up and over Webster Pass
Down the Pass to Keystone, loop around Dillon Reservoir
Then out Tiger Road, up and over Georgia Pass...and down to Michigan Creek Campground for the night

I have reworked the route to slide north of Interstate 70 and experience someof that awesome country.

The bottom pic is the first half of the day and the top pic is the second half of the day.

The highlight of the day will probably be at the end of the ride at Trappers Lake.

Yeah, unfortunately I have been cooped up in the house all week with a very nasty Cold, which has given me the time to work on the mapping.

Only what you need to sleep in the mountains. This year temps were as low as 20F at night, at over 10,000 feet. Small, light, warm...

Just don't forget your tent rain fly . I "knew" a guy on this past CAM 1000 who forgot his and "he" got a little wet....
I suspect August will require more wet weather gear than September.

I was surprised at the amount of dew or frost every morning so a fly is needed. I was comfortable in a -15 Big Agnes bag the entire trip. I packed a bit heavy myself and will lose a couple of items this time, I carried a full sized chair and only used it twice. I packed food for 6 nights and only ate two meals from that. If this year is similar to last year packed food will only be used if we get stuck somewhere late and don't reach a place open to eat or decide to set up camp. Some people like to eat camp food, I liked visiting the different places to eat. I think carrying two suppers would be plenty, we passed places to grab food throughout the trip last year. Breakfast was about 50/50 oatmeal vs. restaurants the planners can guide us better on what to expect for availability. Lunch I carried a protein bar or tuna pack and flat bread but a couple days we stopped for lunch the best was near the end, an ice cream pop and an apple fritter!

Matt had some really up to date and cool camping gear, looking back I think all you really need is a tent, pad, bag, set of clothes including camp shoes, a bit of food and water, tubes or plugs and your tools.

Cool camping items:
packtowl works great, lightweight and packs small
nemo fillo Expensive for a pillow but I love the thing.
nemo pad I used a neo air all season and slept great but Matt's nemo looked awesome, pretty much the same pad but with some foam on top.








OH YEAH! I almost forgot, grease your steering head bearings! Seriously you need to go through your entire bike and freshen up everything that is worn a couple weeks before the trip not the night before.
