They can't be too firm, because they never know who actually shows up until just before the event. Jerry posted yesterday he expects this to be a record turnout. He told me he'll accept 50 deposits for guaranteed starting spots, hoping that will produce 30-40 starters. Much more than 40 starters will be tough to accommodate, though. Just getting enough rooms could be a challenge in some places. Then there are the chase vehicle capacity issues to consider.

In any event, none of us want to be on a stand-by list, so best to secure a spot now.

Jerry is a pretty laid back rallymaster. He has a few strict competition rules, but he generally leaves it to us to sort out the grey areas among ourselves. It usually takes a couple stages before all of us figure things out. Its pretty fun that way. In any event, I am sure he'll be flexible with the deposits like he is with other administrative things.

A few of you are riding motorcycles with a 120/70/17 front tire. Looks like Conti answered the call from you this summer and introduced a Twinduro in your sportbike wheel sizes! Would be perfect front for some of those roads well north. Expensive, but would do a nice job in the mud.

Big singles (DR, KLR, GS, Hus Terra, etc) that can cruise the transits at 70 seem to be the best, but the most popular rides are mud capable twins. I've listed a Yamaha WR250R on my entry, but I have a big single as an option.

Will stay connected. I need to get a mid size dual sport for this (need one anyway), so looking at options. I am kinda liking the cross country, with a few mods like a larger gas tank.

I doubt that I'll be interested in riding back to Kirkland after the finish in Anchorage...how easy is it to arrange a place for my KTM on one of the returning trailers ...and how long do they take to get back?

My friends both got a spot on one trailer the afternoon before the awards banquet. As I recall they took 2.5 days to get back to Kirkland. As we get closer the club will focus on how many support vehicles and trailers.

Meanwhile, Mark and I loaded up and rode back in 3.5 days.

I will say the ride back was very nice. There was no pressure of making stage start times or navigating. We just rode...

Day one started at 6am and ended at Whitehorse and we had to change a tire on the KLR. Day two started with another flat that took awhile, but made it to Ft Nelson about 9pm. Day three ended about 100 mile house I think. We rolled into Kirkland about 2pm. Loaded the trailer and drove straight through to Phoenix. Arrived the following evening.
