Question Seasonal prices

I've been shopping on ebay for a used GPS. I've been reading & researching the various models and looking to see what I can expect to pay.

As i was brousing yesterday I dawned on me that it's probably smarter to wait until "after X-mas" to shop because a lot of folks will be shopping before X-mas for new & used units and the demand will be higher. I figure after X-mas folks will be selling off their old ones and also trying to pay off their shopping bills, so that would be a lot smarter time for me to hunt for a good deal.

Have you guys noticed that pattern with prices?

I cannot comment on pricing, but I will suggest that if you end up buying a used Garmin, that you be sure to get one that was never "registered" with them. You want this because the first registered owner gets a single free update to the most current maps.

What's the chance of finding used ones that haven't been registered? Seems like most folks would.

Also, since my main needs are the topo maps, for routing unmapped trails, I'd think those don't get updated very often, compared to streets, anyway. Wouldn't you agree?

Btw, I'm leaning towards the Dakota 20. They look affordable & technically up to date (from my limited GPS knowledge).

I am told by a guy who buys used GPSs frequently, that it is pretty common for people to buy a GPS and just use it out of the box without ever registering or updating it. Not everyone is a nut about stuff (read: enthusiast) like people here.

I don't know how often the various types of maps are updated, but if you can get a free update, then why not.

I'll have to disagree on the registration issue. Usually the first thing you do is turn it on and update the software and maps.

The original owner of a used unit can transfer registration simply with Garmin easily on their website.

As far as seasonality, I haven't seen any trends, other than the automotive units usually go on special at retailers around now for the holidays.

Depending on the unit you want, you may not see a huge difference, especially with the weatherproof units.

Disagree all you want. People do buy unregistered units and get the free map update. I have no dog in this, I am just telling you what people actually do.
