Renting a KTM 990 for desert trip. Looking for advice.

Hi all,

Im heading to CA from VA to go on a trip with my uncle and brother. Were going to do 4 days in some California deserts. Im renting a 990 Adventure from a family friends rental company and Im curious as to what quirks the bike may have and what basic tools you KTM guys ride with.

I ride a Honda 450x back home and have only ridden 1 KTM for a few minutes. Im excited about riding this bike as Ive always liked the Adventure and I think Ill really enjoy this in the desert.

Any advice for a KTM/Adventure noob?

Bike should come with a pretty complete tool kit on board If bike is well kept you should need to do nothing for a 4 day ride.

Hold on above 6,000 RPMs. This is 2 of your 450s.

I lean toward the thought of flat repair tools/tubes mainly. Pinch flats would be my biggest worry hauling butt in open desert terrain. The stock tool kit with these bikes is actually pretty good.

These bikes can pretty much do anything but occasionally you get reminded that they are 500 lbs.

Don't let the sidestand switch fool you. First time I ever forgot the sidestand was down was in the middle of nowhere, Nevada. Had an "Oh crap! What's wrong with my bike!" moment before I realized it was just the switch. Would suck if you didn't know and started tearing into the bike trying to find a phantom electrical problem.

That's what I'm afraid of lol.

I love my X in the woods and that's 99% of my riding. But recently I've been getting the bug for a big adventure bike. This one is in the front of my mind.

Nothing like a Honda

This is a huge dirt bike, with tons of controllable power. The one thing off road to remember and get use to is the stopping distance, because of the weight it carries it takes a bit more space than your 450 does.
You might want to bring some sort of tire repair kit. The bike should have all the tools you need for other repairs.
Other than that enjoy then heck out of it. Just be ready to compare every other bike you ever ride to the one you're about to rent.

Yes.

Grasp the bars firmly before twisting the throttle.

Seriously, though, if you have a lot of dirt experience, learn to turn off the ABS when off road. Freaks me out when I forget.

It's a great bike, but it's big !

Where the hell do find someone that well you ride their 990 for 4 days. It took me a week or two to get going on the beast now my 450x collects dust in the spare room.+1 on get the checkbook out

Yep... thats what will happen!!

Spare tubes & the tools to change them are all you should need.

Watch out for arroyos while ripping 90+ down some 2 track road!!

Can't over-emphasize the point about pinch flats at speed with this hot rod, esp the front. So watch out for baby heads esp at high noon when the shadows are minimal and they are hard to see.

These bikes like to be keep going about 25 mph or so for cooling airflow. If you do some slow stuff like Mojave Trail expect to stop every now an then to cool things back to 4 bars, this is just quirk of the bike and totally manageable.

Have a good time, get to Vegas late on last day from the south on the powerline road. When you come over the last rise the Vegas strip and the light beam from the Luxor pyramid will fill your vision and you will never forget that sight!

Thanks for the advice gentlemen. All of this is definitely going to be useful. Were going to have 5 gopros between the 3 of us so Ill be sure to edit together an awesome video.

Avoid moderate to deep sand.
I kid you not........the 990 is a bitch in the deep stuff
Tough choice to make when you're in it, do I point it straight and go fast or 1st gear it with your feet down?
Since I'm usually by myself and would rather not crash, I 1st gear it paying close attention that my legs do not contact panniers as I maintain balance. Just remember if you go the faster option, it's easier on your heart, but you are probably not going to be able to "save it" when the front tire decides to track elsewhere.
In summary, it sucks soo bad in the sand I go out of my way to avaoid it :^(

Other than that, practice stopping and turning around on sloped terrain and find the best way to park for mounting/dimounting bike based on your stature (very tall seat height/bike is heavy).

Keep these things in mind, plus the earlier post about stopping/braking distance, and you will not find a better steed to cover the miles!
