Northern California loop - Low miles, good food and wine

Earlier this month the three of us left from the San Francisco bay area for a week long loop in northern California. The objective was to take it easy, no camping, no fast food (if possible) and no firm destination, just decide as we go.

We got together for dinner the night before departure to plan the first day. My lovely wife and myself.

My handsome son

Roger expressing an opinion

I'm confused, as usual

Day of departure, bikes are ready to go

Fast-forward, North on 280 to Golden Gate bridge to CA1 and we are the California coast

Point Reyes lighthouse, worth the detour

Peter pointing out

Can you guess where the wind is blowing?

Since we started late we didn't ride a lot that day, and decided to stay in the Bodega Bay Lodge & Spa. Very nice.

They have good restaurant

Peter's first oyster, ever!

Food porn.

Bodega Bay at night

Said good night to the bikes and went to sleep

Have to run will post more later...

Day 2

Checked out of the Bodega Bay lodge and went for breakfast at the Sandpiper

And here's breakfast

BTW, for travel in California we found this book very helpful:
http://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Jou...3825292&sr=1-2

Next stop was Fort Ross. We didn't realize that Mama Russia actually owned forts here till the mid 1800's. I liked what the last administrator of the fort had to say about California:

Here are some pictures from the fort

Smugmug stopped working on me for some reason, more to come...

Day 2 cont.

Next stop Point Arena light house. Obviously, have to get one of those lighthouse motorcycle pictures, but this one is pretty lame.

The lens they use in lighthouses

We finished the day in Mendocino, staying in the historical Mendocino Hotel

Feels like the wild west here

This little town is full of art

All you need is love

If you can get fresh oysters on the street, this place must be good, they were raising money for some good cause.

A bunch of old cars showed up in town

Dinner that night

One final drink in the lobby and sleep

More tomorrow...

Thanks! All three of us took photos so I cannot take all the credit.

All three of us are photo geeks and probably had between us $6000-$7000 worth of gear. Peter is using Canon 5D mark II and a 24-105 lens. Roger is using a Nikon D700 with 35mm & 20mm lenses. This time all I had with me is a little Panasonic LX3 and many of the photos here were taken with it.

Day 3

We got up and continues north on CA1. At Leggett we stopped to plan the next phase

We stopped for lunch, food was shit, so no pictures. But then Peter discovered that one of the cameras sometimes focuses on the wrong subject. Hate it when that happens!

I am not paying attention and sending emails

We continued to Humboldt county, the redwoods are amazing and the avenue of the giants is super cool. We were so blown away we forgot to take pictures. We turned west on rt. 211 to Honeydew and continued on Mattole Rd. to Eureka. Mattole road is spectacular!!!

Honeydew bridge

FF to Eureka where we decided to stay in the historical Eagle Hotel

They are so motorcycle friendly that if they do not have a function in the ball room, they let you bring the bikes in!!!

We went for a little walk in Eureka and discovered that not much is going on there at night

Later that night, after a big meal and a few drinks we played with the bikes before putting them to sleep

More tomorrow...

Day 4, 5, 6

This morning we decided to cut across to the northern Sierras. Not a lot of pictures, we spent most of the day making time.

Lunch and fuel in the Wildwood store

Old school ice tea

On the way we made some bug art

In Chester, CA we found Dinky

This is his story

In Chester we had Chinese food for dinner. I have never had soggier, microwaved, more disgusting food! The Picture makes it look good but trust me, I wouldn't feed it to my dog.

Day 6 was all about riding in the northern sierras. First Feather Canyon Road, a beautiful canyon road.

Sierra County Sheriff's gallows

It's cool to see snow so late in May

We decided to stop for the night in Trukee, stayed in a really cool hotel, Cedar House Sports Hotel. The owners modeled the hotel after Alpine sport hotels.

Dinner at Moody's bistro

Dessert was so good, we forgot to take pictures

Next day we headed to Napa and stopped early in the day in Calistoga. We spent the next 2 days drinking wine and driving around Napa.

Before heading home we stopped for lunch in Yountville, to eat in Bouchon, a Thomas Keller restaurant.

... And we made it home!!!

Next generation in training...

I know you took these images some years back, but I recently discovered them. As a bay area native I always enjoy looking at images taken from the area... and who doesn't like food porn!? Thanks again for sharing.
