Dead, semi-wet GS.............

'99 R1100GS

Rode home from work today in a moderate rain with lots of spray from surrounding traffic. Went eight miles without a hiccup, then I stopped at a stop-light. As the light turned green I opened the throttle a bit to get moving and it just died. Thumb the throttle and starter spins the motor over just fine, but no fire. So I paddled over to the median strip to get out of everyone elses way.

I let the bike sit for a couple of minutes then hit the starter again. It tried to catch a couple of times, then the engine just spins. The tach doesn't register the motor turning over, nor does it go all wacky like when the Hall sensor goes bad. The fuel pump kicks on as usual, the bike just won't start.

I cannot tell if this is rain related or not.

What's it sound like to you? Dead coil maybe??

Does the bike have a gear position sensor, down low somewhere?

Yes, I am sure it does. I think if it was the problem, the engine wouldn't turn over nor the fuel pump run.

You're right, the fuel pump would be disabled until the clutch or neutral safety circuit closed. This might be a long shot, but could the rubber seal on your gas cap be shot, allowing water into you gas tank and settling to the bottom of the tank? It's possible that the bike ran for 8 miles because the slug of water had to displace all of the fuel that was already in the filter and fuel lines.

My money is on a bad Hall Sensor.....My 1100RT did the same thing. Trailered home and it started the next morning.

I had hall sensor trouble in the past. The tach bounced wildly when I hit the starter. No bounce, no reading at all now.

When I had a bad Hall sensor on my 1150, I saw what you're seeing. I never saw the tach go crazy.

like many things, Hall sensors have different failure modes.

You have had the intermittent and false trigger mode before.

Now you appear to have the totally dead mode.

If by totally you mean in traffic, in the rain, far from home I think you may be on to something.

What confuses me is that it tried to hit a few times about 5 minutes after it died.

Yep! Heading home on I-40 on a Sunday, a few hours in the rain, bike stops, I fiddle with everything I can (but the Hall sensor), bike starts and runs another hour in the rain, I must be a mechanical genius! Bike quits again for good in East Memphis, near an exit, near motels and 1.5 miles from the BMW dealer, who opens Tuesday morning. Got great help from a local with a pickup who hauled my bike to his shop for security until Tuesday AM. Simultaneously a local LEO stops and gives me the personal cell # of the BMW service manager who is on vacation but he assures me he'll be there Tuesday and they'll get on my bike first thing. Tuesday AM my formerly dead-as-a-hammer bike (now dried out) starts like nothing ever happened. I ride it to the BMW shop, they try to duplicate the problem, no joy, and I decide, after some discussion, on a new Hall sensor. While waiting I had lunch with a new friend (Baptist preacher getting his bike worked on also) and bike was ready when we returned. Thanks to some fine folks in Memphis I met providentially, BMW Motorcyces of Memphis and service manager Marvin Siano I was safely on the road before dawn the next morning. Bike has run without a hiccup since.
My money's on a bad Hall sensor.

Forget anything that's written about what does and does not happen with a bad Hall sensor - there's just way too many symptoms that it may or may not exhibit. I'm convinced the only way to know is to swap it out and see if the problem goes away. And if its intermittent, you'll never really know for sure.

The good thing is, your damn motor can't read. If it says oil on the container, it's pretty much OK to dump in there.... ED.

Check out this thread. Turned out to be the Hall sensor after a new one was installed and broken by a dealer.
