September 2013 Indianapolis - Colorado Springs - Hamilton, Montana

My name is Nick and I like to ride motorcycles. The first step is admitting the problem or so I hear. Unfortunantly that is as far as I get and I can't stop wanting more riding time. Over this summer I did an east coast trip to Virginia beach up through the Smokies and to Nashville, TN for a night. For 2013 I wanted to ride more miles for one trip. It is not only something I can brag to my squid friends when they are in there native lands (parking lots) it's also memories I should get now before I go and do something like get married and have some kids. The purpose of this thread is to learn from people who have made trips like this before of which there is plenty of that on this wonderful website.

So the plan is to leave Indianapolis around September 1ish and after all is said and done be back between the 16-18. I'll be riding my 2012 BMW f650gs. I'm headed to Colorado Springs to visit some long time friends and decided to just head up north to Montana to visit my friend Tipi Joe. Tipi Joe you just said?? Well he was born in a Tipi. Stay tuned in and one day I can tell the story. I laughed for 2 hours straight when he told me and was asked to leave a pre deployment health meeting due to my laughter. I was going to do this trip solo and told my buddy Adam I wont be doing our usual week long Smoky Mountain trip in September and told him about my plan for this before he rudely interrupted and told me to just tell him when and where to meet and he'll follow along. Works for me! He will be on his Fz1.

Indianapolis to Colorado Springs
I have this part of the route already made in Basecamp and I'm planning 2-3 days of travel to Colorado Springs. Probably a comfortable 400-450 a day with a total of about 1100 miles to Colorado Springs. Adam and I both agreed we don't want to push 600 mile days like we did last summer heading to Virginia beach. It beat out asses. Mostly will be on 70 with a few back roads just to get off the highway for a minute. I didn't see much of anything else as an alternate without adding an extra day or more. This is the part of the trip I don't have to many questions about. Flat land. Corn. Flat land. I live in Indiana. I'm an expert at that kind of riding. We wll spend 2 days in Colorado vising our long term friends then make our way to Montana to visit Tipi Joe.

Colorado Springs to Tipi Joe in Hamilton, Montana
And now the story of Tipi Joe. Just kidding its not time yet. Back to topic.. This is the part of the trip I need help with. I don't know a whole lot bout this part of the United States and what to expect traveling north here. Another decision is if I want to travel 6 more hours out of my way and visit four corners monument and if it is even worth it? With the hills and mountains what is more of an ideal miles per day we should set. We are both decent riders and can handle a corner or two considering out flat Indiana environment. Weather: Should we expect it all in September because of elevation changes? Routing. I have a few different ideas but at one point I am defiantly traveling north on highway 93. I have developed a road crush for it after following it on google maps. Any other advice or ideas. We will have to stay mostly pavement because of Adam's FZ1. We are doing hotels. Camping gear is extra weight and the weather is always to shitty to sleep when were knocking some milage out in a day.

After I get this part of the trip chalked in I will move onto brain storming my route home from Montana.

One of my ideas if I did go visit a piece of concrete with 4 corners of states was to travel north so I can travel through the Moab desert. I don't know if this would be as exciting as I think it will be or not. I lived in a desert of shit for 9 months and it wasn't exciting scenery wise. maybe its just the challenge of riding the beamer through the desert on pavement that sparks interest.

I70 is going to be so boring. Done that drive many times (in a car). US50 will get you all the way to Pueblo, CO. Of course it'll add time, but maybe make KS not terrible.

Heya Nick, jes stumbled into your post. If you were to make the run to 4-corners from the Springs, drop south a bit to hyw 50, then west to Salida. Turn left and head to Del Norte and pick up 160 west over Wolfcreek pass to Pagosa Springs, Durango and the Corners. When you are through with that you have a big decision to make... North to Moab and the Arches or back to Durango and up the "Million Dollar Highway" to Silverton and Ouray via Red Mountian pass on Hwy 550... which is very nice.

I dont know where T-pee Joe lives in Montana, so from here I dont know which way you would be heading.... the eastern half or the western half...

my 2 pennys anyway...

I'm came up with some routes from colorado springs to hamilton montana with this one being my base layout of what I want.. If anyone has some great suggestions let me know please. We want to stay mostly pavement as Adam is on an FZ1. He will do light gravel and dirt though. I almost want to incorporate something through the Moab but not sure. I'm working on this segment now and then will need advice from Montana back to Indianapolis.

you should consider taking 36 instead of 70. Its about the same mileage and you get to avoid the traffic of 70. Plan your gas carefully going across 36 as it can be a long way between available gas. I know several people that ride from denver to ohio and prefer 36 over the interstate.

I'll ask my buddy his opinion. hour and a half more 4 miles less but more scenery it seems.
