Mendo NF Mill Fire VOLUNTEER DAY, 10am-4pm Saturday, 12/15/12

Mendocino National Forest (MNF) is having its third monthly forest rehab volunteer work party to address the aftermath of the Mill Fire. A completed volunteer agreement form is required to participate, if you haven’t already submitted one. You may leave the top row of boxes blank; please fill out the rest, sign and return it to MNF by fax: 530-963-3173 or submit it at the event.

Location: Davis Flat Campground
9.5 miles west of Stonyford on Road 18N03
Lat - 39° 21' 46.56959", Long - 122° 39' 13.4028"
NO WATER at campground
Nearest food and gas at Stonyford
Vouchers for free camping Saturday night at Davis Flat Campground will be available to participants at the event.

Per MNF: "Focus will be in Fouts Springs and the project will be dependent on the weather but will most likely be making and installing barriers. Camping will be free for volunteers in Davis Flat. I will have a better idea of the agenda once we understand what the weather might bring."

MNF campground, road and trail closure information here.

BTW, the peak of the Geminids meteor shower is forecast for the night of the 13th, but will be ongoing through the 18th.

Save the date, another volunteer day is scheduled for January 19.

Rain or shine event. Please bring a sledgehammer, if you have one.

This morning, from the MNF:
"We will be continuing the installment of barriers, in the Fouts Spring area, in order to provide protection for our cultural and historic sites here at Stonyford."

"The proposed agenda for this event is as follows:

10:00am-10:30am – Meet at Davis Flat Campground – Look for the Us Forest Service Vehicles and personnel.
At this time we will go over the volunteer agreements, project (location) and discuss any job hazards or safety concerns related to this project.
If it is raining heavily we will meet in the Maintenance Yard located in Fouts Springs. (Signs will be posted)
10:45am – Meet at Jobsite with assigned US Forest Service Personnel
Please bring your necessary PPE (listed below) and water with you at this time.
10:45am-12:00pm – Work on building and installation of barriers
12:00pm-1:00pm – Lunch Break
1:00pm-3:00pm – Continue work on barrier installation
3:00pm-4:00pm – Gather all tools and equipment used and debrief

This project is mostly going to utilize our man power, so no bikes or heavy equipment is needed for this event but please bring a sledge hammer if you have one. We do have a generator, for those of you who brought one last time, but I do not think its necessary to bring additional power tool since it been raining because the ground is pretty saturated.

What we need you to bring is your PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) such as:

1. Boots (above the ankle)
2. Gloves (we have extras if you do not have a pair)
3. Eye Protection (safety glasses)
4. Hard Hat (we will have extras if you need one)
5. Long sleeves and pants

All these items will be required to work at this event in accordance with the US Forest Service Safety Guidelines."
