Starved for oil, probably the second most common catastrophic failure (doo the first). Can't blame lack of proper maintance on a bad design. You need to keep clean oil in it, they will last.

Bad design? Chrysler did it with the die cast clant six blocks. Old Ford CVH heads ran the cam directly on the casting. It's actually not that bad. And it is fixible if it really needs to be fixed. Damage isn't that different is you spun a bearing insert. Do you want roller bearings that spit a bunch of steel needles throughout the engine when they come apart? How about a set of bolt in cam towers that never line up due to tolerance stack up? There is never a perfect fix. But as long as fresh oil is kept in the engine it is capable of running a very long time.

1998 KLR with 15k. I have three bikes so the miles get split up. I do have a question. First, I don't want to start an oil thread, and I don't want to hi jack this mileage thread. I just need to know this, can I run Mobil 1 15w-50wt full synthetic in my KLR? Let me know, I just picked up 3 quarts last night to do an oil change. If not I'll take it back.

Controversial, I know, but . . . I'll go out on a limb! If your oil meets the API Service Codes and falls within the viscosity recommendations from this Generation 1 Owner's Manual page, I'd say: go for it!

The KLR isn't picky about oil. But remember the oil isn't just the engine, it also does the transmission and clutch. The clutch is why I change the oil often. The clutch is also why I have avoided synthetic oil. I have read enough that the synthetic oil changes the feel of the clutch enough that I am not interested in it.

Couldn't tell any signifcant functional difference in clutch operation between Rotella synthetic 5W-40 and petroleum-based 15W-40, myself, but that doesn't mean it's not there.

The two lubricants may have different lubricities, and different engagement characteristics, but--I don't consider synthetic oil (within manufacturer's recommended specifications) necessarily harmful; YMMV!

And It's not led an easy life.....see please Perry Mountain 24 Hour Challenge thread. Anyway....I adjusted the valves at 42,000 miles, just because I thought thru might need attention. Intake tight, exhaust still in spec. I hope to get 100,00 before re-ringing.

My '98 KLR actually has 12,366 miles on it. I'll try to do better I promise..... :)
