Anyone here who could shed some light on my shock conversion? I was under the impression that the TTR 225/230 rear shock would bolt onto the 225. I just received my shock off Ebay and there are 2 things that are different.
The bottom yoke that bolts to the swingarm is a lot more narrow than the 225.2nd problem is the top mounting bolt is smaller than the 225. Any help appreciated!

Can't say the the 235 and 230 shock are the same. But the TTR225 is a 100% bolt up match with the XT225. I have done this swap myself.
Either the TTR 225 and 230 are different or you got the wrong shock.

They are different, I got mine off ebay but it was from a local dismantling shop and he had both.

shinko 244 tire size recommendations

I picked up a clean ‘06 xt225 today so my son will go riding with me. Nice small light bike, my DR350 feels like a bloated pig in comparison. The tires could use replacing, the stock rear is 120/80, does that translate to Shinko 244 4.60? From reading some of the tire posts it sounds like sizes aren’t the same from one manufacturer to the other, some posts mention 4.10 for this bike. Front should be Shinko 2.75 right?

Thanks

Great year! I'm currently running 80/90-21 and 120/80-18 which translate to 3.1 and 4.7 inch widths. If I ran knobbies for more off road I wouldn't go any bigger but I run Pirelli A/T Scorpion MT90 front and rear (thanks again Dan Oaks) so one size larger should fit. At ~23k miles the rear tire is finally getting bald. Slightly longer legs would suit me fine so that's my Q1 plan. The front tire still looks good so I'll defer that. When I do a size larger may not quite fix the speedo but it should be closer to actual.

Rock on!

Thanks, I wanted to stay close to stock size so ordered the 2.75 front and 4.60 backbut debated the 3 for the front.

This monster thread on the 225s is great. I don't have the original owners manual but found the link and downloaded the read only PDF. I have a Clymer manual for my DR350 but couldn't find one for the xt. Any suggestions for a good repair/service manual that is simple like the Clymer? For a service manual I really want paper, not some electronic only version.

I was kind of concerned that the low height would make the bike feel cramped but even though it is compact it doesn't feel cramped. My son is a little shorter and really likes the size. I can see why these have such a following. For reference I rode a DR200 a little in the past, I wasn't that impressed with it and I like this a lot more, feels lighter, more agile and seems considerably more peppy

Preferably unmounted.

The same 110/130 swap can be done to the TW. Slightly different hardware, but the backing plate is key.

Help a cousin out.
Hope this helps.

I checked out a 2001 XT225 today.
Looked it over and took it out for a test ride.
Everything seemed to work well.
The gentleman wants $2,000
The bike has 4,200 miles on it.
Does that sound like a reasonable price.
I also checked out a 2008 XT250 which has 9,300 miles on it, and that guy wants $3,000.
2001 seems really old, but the bike does not look old or beat up, has new tires.
I'm leaning toward the XT225

2001 looks great, shouldn't be any maintenance issues for another 7000 miles at least. 1900 to 2000 is a fair price IMHO.

Seems high for a 2001 to me. ~$1500 seems more like it. Maybe $1700?

KBB in excellent condition, from dealer is $1615. I only contacted a few sellers over the past month but each one immediately accepted tentative offer of this KBB or the usually slightly lower NADA average price. For 2001 the NADA seems too low at <$1200 at least for the one you are looking at. But I wouldn’t hesitate to let the buyer know that KBB “excellent condition from a dealer” is $1615. I don’t know if sellers already knew that or not but it seemed to have a lot of traction in negotiation.

I don't know the market in CA, but I picked up this 2001 in very good shape, with about 3400 miles, with most of the stuff already done that I did to my 2003 for a little less than he's asking. That's not a horrible price. I do think it is a little high since it has no noticeable upgrades except grips. When I put my 2001 up for sale I will be asking that much or more because of its shape, mileage and because of all the upgrades. Worthy upgrades like Renthal bars and risers, hand guards, luggage rack, larger pegs, center stand, jetting, etc, all cost time and money and make the bike better and more enjoyable. That is worth something.

I would make a knowledge based offer using nada and kbb printouts, and point out all the things you would have to do. That's not a low ball, just smart shopping.

But, being in good shape and low mileage is worth something too, if its what you want.
