Need quick help regarding /5 flywheel bolts

Hello all,

I'm replacing the clutch and rear main seal on my '73 R60/5 today. So far it's gone pretty well - one stripped clutch bolt, but I finally got it out. And yes, I blocked the crank!

Here's the problem, once I got the flywheel bolts out, I noticed that the replacment bolts I bought are different:

The old one is on the right, new one on the left. I'm surprised, because I bought these from a great local resource - an airhead guru that really knows his stuff. I've read there were some changes to the flywheel/clutch assembly through the years. Mine has the small spacers between the pressure plate and the pressure ring.

So my question - is there any way I can use the new bolts or do I need to return them for the correct ones?

I was hoping to get this whole job done today, but if I can't, I can't.

Last question - any tips on getting the flywheel off? Seems stuck pretty good, even though the bolts have been removed.

According to the info I have the shorter, 24mm, 10mm bolts are all of /5. The longer ones,32mm, 10mm are until Sept. 1975. If the longer ones fit you can use them but I wouldn't try to drill and tap to do that. I think some of the later /5es might take them but not sure at all.

I have a really old puller that I use for the flywheel. I think some with out a puller are stuck with kinda rockin' it off. Take your time. Don't force it.

I am right in the middle of the same chore - new rear main seal, oil pump seal, and new clutch, too. Got my transmission out today; going to call it quits for now. Backdrifter, you do not have to use new flywheel bolts. While it may be a good idea to use new ones, it is optional. If you can't find the correct bolts you can re-use the old ones.

craydds - thanks for the info. That's interesting, you're the first I've heard say that the /5 flywheel bolts can be reused. Either way, I've come this far and I'm not going to get anxious over or cheap out on flywheel bolts. I tried screwing them in, and they're too long and won't seat where they need to, so I'll return them and swap them for the right ones.

disston - thanks for the help as well. I ended up going this route to remove the flywheel, and it worked pretty well.

I'd debate the wisdom of re-using 10mm flywheel bolts.

Unlike the later 11mm flywheel bolts, the 10mm bolts as fitted to the /5 and the first two years of the /6 are designed to stretch.

YMMV etc.

Thanks, Max. Even if they were reusable I wouldn't reuse them. I'm going all out with the hopes of never having to get this far into the engine of this bike again in my lifetime!

I stand corrected. I reviewed some information that said to REPLACE the old 10 mm bolts with NEW bolts. It is the 11 mm bolts that can be re-used. Don't remember where I read that one could re-use the 10 mm bolts, but I will find the source and proceed to taunt them.

The bolts with the "neck" between the threads and the head are stretch bolts and and must not be reused.
