2013 Tidewater NYD Ride - 5th Annual
Season's Greetings -- Time to get the Tidewater NYD Ride for 2013 set up.
Hope all is well. I'm splitting time between DC and Suffolk, and never seem to have enough time, but I wouldn't miss our New Years Day ride. I nominate myself to get things organized. I'd like to do a modification to the 2009 ride from VA Beach, take the Currituck Ferry and have a festive lunch at the Jolly Roger in Kitty Hawk. They got pounded pretty good out there this winter and I'd like to show our support. I already called the restaurant - They survived intact, will be open, and would love to see us. Here's links to our previous NYD rides: 2009: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=418068 2010: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=534818 2011: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=643157 2012: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=750341 This Years Schedule/Route: Jan 1 - 2013 0800-0845: Meet Up at the WaWa Gas Station - 4377 Holland Road, Va Bch, VA (South of I-264 & Independence) 08:45 Kick Stands Up: Depart for Knott Island Ferry - Ferry Departs at 10 AM. 09:35 Arrive at the Knotts Island Ferry terminal - for the lineup. 10:00 Ferry Departs The next ferry would be leaving Knotts Island at 1200 10:45 Arrive at the Currituck Ferry Terminal 11:45 Arrive at the Jolly Roger in Kill Devil Hills, NC, Beach Road MP 6.5. This is all county maintained roads or better. No Dirt - All Riders welcome. -NEW - Detailed Route Info: South on Independence to right turn onto Salem Rd. Salem Rd to Right turn on North Landing North Landing across the Lock, then Left turn onto Fentress Air Field, to Blackwater Rd Blackwater Rd to Left tun on Pungo Ferry Rd, cross the high rise. Pungo Ferry to Right Turn onto Princess Anne (VA 615).. Follow this road into NC, becomes NC 615 - Marsh Causeway then Knott Island Rd. This took me 50 minutes to run in my car Sunday Morning, figured the traffic would be the same if not lighter. Other than the Left turn out of the WaWa onto Independence, there are no real hazards or road construction, though several sections are quite low and will probably have standing water in the vehicle tracks. Ferry leaves at 10. So we'll need to leave on time to make the ferry line-up. The ride on the NC side of the run is simply down 158 out to Kill Devil Hills. The Restaurant is on Beach Drive at 4th Street, behind the Movie Theater on 158. I wasn't going to take everyone down Beach Drive as it may be a sandy mess. You can ride it on the way out if you'd like..... After Enjoying lunch and everyone can head out on their own to explore before heading home, or possibly join me for the ride back up 17. I realize this may be a bit early for some riders. The next Ferry would be 1200 and the ride would eat the whole day. Many of us have family time needs too. Riders can join us anywhere along the route and family is welcome to drive a cage to the Jolly Roger as well. If the weather is too rough, The ferry may be shut down - alternate is just to take 17 down. Truly crappy weather may force a major change in plans - which we'll figure out if needed. The restaurant would like a headcount for planning purposes, so let's get a Roll Call going. IN 1. Tidewater KLR - (Ethan) 2. Stoked Steve 3. PatrickInVA 4. TheWorstKind 5. Dash2 6. TommyHoff - Ride only 7. Fredfredburger 8. Mowman MAYBEers 1. APJ757 2. Moymurphs 3. QtownKLR OUT 1. Henderson757 2. Nomad Tidewater KLR screwed with this post 12-31-2012 at 09:04 PM Reason: Update Roll Call |

Other than that, can't wait.

This is a "No Dirt" ride - The route will be on maintained county roads or better. That said, it is Winter, so there may be some road conditions to consider, and of course some sand on the roads at Kill Devil Hills. The 2011 Ride had us behind a Snow Plow for a little bit..
(Still sorry about that guys ) All we can do is plan and hope Mother Nature plays along. TKLR |

Mornin' All,
Hi Chris - Lots of good riding out there for the New Year, I'm partial to Desert runs and enjoying some elbow room. Put APJ757 on the Maybe list - That's Maybe for Lunch right? - The roll call is primarily to count seats needed. TKLR |

Put me in the "Maybe" list. I should be off the night before. IF I do go I'll join the group on the mainland side of the ferry as it's just down the street from me.

Roll Call is being updated as I see 'em. Welcome Dash2.
I'm also watching the Accuweather Extended Forecast for VA Beach. So Far it's looking like a relatively warm and bike friendly window around the 1st. TKLR |

Move ya to the OUT list Henderson, but you're welcome to get back in if there is a schedule change.
Looks like there is a real good chance for decent weather this year. Spread the word if you would, lets see if we can't get a few garage queens out on the road.
