Welp, after doing 65 miles today in likely some of the gnarliest riding in Florida, realized my front suspension is...err, not quite adequate for my new found riding habits. So, having just sold (and in the process) of selling a few of my unused bikes, came to the conclusion I want to go ahead and an USD conversion.

I have an 86 model; rear shock as already been reworked, and it's fine (though, I may need a new spring soon). I know the 89 CR front end/steam slide right in, but what about later model CRF450 forks? A gent local to me has a 2005 CRF450R with a grenaded motor, and wants next to nothing for it (wheels are straight and true; I can probably part the rest of the bike out to cover my costs). I've read and heard about alignment issues with the steering stops; what's all of your solutions?

Just looking for different ideas before I go off spending $$$ on forks and a machinist.

I welded on some 1/2" blocks and dry fit the forks. Ground them down to get the forks to stop just before touching the tank. It's just below the harness hoop.

Damn itttttttttttt Okay... so While wrestling the carb back into the bike, I think i tugged on one of the wires. Now, the brake light stays on. As in both filaments are lit up on the taillamp. I popped open the seat and i found 2 things that are funny. The bike is a 1994 XR600 and it has an old Baja Designs kit on it.


There's a random black wire that is attached to the bolt that seems to go nowhere. It really seems to have no home. Also, there's a red wire with bullet connector that appears to go into the little 1 into 2 connectors that are red wires also. I plugged it in there and that didn't fix it. Do you think my switch is bad? What happens if you disconnect the brake light switch? Maybe the wiring got messed up inside so it thinks that I am constantly pressing down on the brake?
I'm more worried about where these wires go than a bad 5 dollar switch. What did I dooooo? The bike doesn't have a front one. Don't tell the local Law enforcement though. I'll get one eventually.

Okay, if you switch you switch the white and green wires running off the tail light, the brake pedal switch works. The tail light running light doesnt work, but it will light up if you press on the pedal.

Look at the brake light switch down by the rear brake pedal. I'll bet that the switch is extended and turning on the brake light. The switch is adjustable for length. Easy test is to take the spring off of the pedal and see is the light goes off.

The random black wire is a ground wire. "normally" black is ground, and that one is defiantly going to the frame/ground.

The way I think about it, you can make an "event" ( ie: light come on ) when the circuit is competed 2 ways. Either you add the juice or you can connect the ground. Either way it will complete the circuit and make whatever get power.

I'm using the wrong terminology probably and probably only confused you. Sorry

Any reason to choose a xr600r over the XR650L? I'd like to do a ride with my son for his senior year and I'm considering getting a xr600r for him. I'd like to have an e-start is the main thing. Looks like it could be done but why go to the trouble to add an estart when the xr650l already has it?

The 600 has more power and weighs less both in considerable amounts. Two of the most important things to me too

You'll have to look for a tagged/ plated 600. They are out there, but didn't come stock.

The kicking really isn't an issue to me. 3 max when it's cold and 1 when it's hot. That's worth 50lbs to me.

Maybe some more suspension and whatnot too, but weight, power, and tag are the three biggest I'd say. And all are big.

nope. Light does not go off. Undid the spring, undid the mounting tab and everything. Played with it in my hand too while I watched the tailight.. Again.. the switch works if i swap the wires in the back. No one has one of these old school baja designs kits? I think i'll delete that random ground wire that goes nowhere. Poses more of a hazard than a purpose. Maybe I'll play with some aligator clips for a while and see what I can do.

I could not tell from your photo where the battery is located? I didn't see the FET switch either (aka WTF box)

My guess is that the black wire is to ground the battery negative to the frame.

my bike doesnt have a battery either, but has the fet switch, aka wtf box....

i jsut wired a completley seperate circuit for the blinkers and horn. that run on a 12v battery, and when it gets low i charge it. which isnt often cause i never use blinkers or horn. its jsut there IN CASE i get a cop behind me. and to get it inspected.

Do you notice that strip of two sided tape on the top pf the air box? I THINK that the ground MIGHT have hooked up to to a small ni-cad battery in that location. I have one on my bike. It's LONG past dead but from what I have read it was used to power the taillight for a short time when the engine wasn't running when the power switch or key was turned on. Do you also see that red wire with the bullet connector that is just sitting there on the left? Does that go to anything?

That bit of tape once held the battery in place. The mystery black wire and the red wire with the bullet connector both went to the battery.
