Savage 650?
Whats the power like on a Savage 650? Does it compare well to the DR650? I have a DR now but I have a chance to pick up a Savage cheap. I was thinking about making a scrambler type bike out of it. I've been looking for a great gravel road bomber. The DR is really more dirt oriented than I need but it works well. I kinda like a scrambler style bikes.
Thanks, Murf |

The Savage 650 is a dog compared to just about anything over 400cc. It makes about 30 HP with a very mild power curve, and the carb is decidedly cold-blooded. With the right mods and throwing enough money at it, people have gotten about 12-15 more horsepower out of it.

I briefly rode one about 4 or 5 years ago, I remember it being really low powered and pretty boring to be honest. It just never seemed like it wanted to make any power. I think my KLR makes more power if I remember the savage right.

I think it would make a good starting point for a scrambler/mellow dual sport.
For power, the usual things will likely help lots, let more air in, change to a pumper carb and jet, open up the exhaust a bit. Broad power and loads of torque are great in the dirt. |

There's a guy named Lancer over at SuzukiSavage.com who's done a bunch to his bike—pipe, cam, round-slide carb—and has manged to wake up the engine. He sells a carb kit and some other stuff on ebay.
