How to convert a super duke to an adventure?

Hi team, there has been lots of mods to use road wheels on adventure etc....has any one gone the other way so a SE / Adventure type hybrid via a super duke?
I have lead on a super duke that was crashed and resold cheapish.

Not not after a super duke but an adv.I assume the fork angle is steeper and swing arm is shorter, same with the shock. Could you bolt up a 21 in front wheel? I've had a look at thinks like rake and trail and suspension travel, they are all similar? Any wisdom? The reason I'm thinking this way is the donor bike eg the super duke may be cheap.... Cheers

sounds like quite a project.... are you looking to just make the super duke taller with adventure wheels and tires? I just traded my 08 Super Duke for a 2012 adventure and there were lots of differences, but if you get the bike cheap enough and want an interesting project, that would certainly be one. Watch out for the exhaust running under the motor if you get too crazy off road, or make a beefy skid plate

It better be really cheap as you will end up paying a lot for parts and probably some custom stuff.

I highly doubt you could drop a 21" wheel in there. The front wheel hugger would have to go. Then it's likely there's not enough room for the wheel without contacting the radiator and the wheel might well contact the under side of the top triple if you bottomed out the forks - which if very likely as they are short stroke street oriented forks.

But - if you are ok with more of sport tour concept - well then you're looking to make it much more like the SM-T. SM-T forks should be a direct swap and I *THINK* (but am not sure) that they SM-T forks are longer. the 990 or 950 SuperMoto might be a donor as well. Also you'd need to look at the shock to fully consider geometry changes.

Without some custom fab for a skid plate or similar guard it's going to be vulnerable down low in front.

Super Duke to Adventure conversion is easy.

Buy the Duke, then sell it. This converts the Duke into cash, then buy an Adventure.

At most, the SD would take a 19/17 wheel set which has been done on a SM bike a few times (including by me) but I'm not even sure of that as I've never seen it tried. The SD is a much more forward riding position sport bike than the SM which doesn't seem like would be suited to this conversion. As someone else said, the short stroke forks may bottom the front wheel (even with a 19" front) into the triples as well, which would suck.

Buy the SD and street fighter it.

Yep - with sufficient traction on your road suface, bottoming the forks with a wheel big enough to hit the triples is a good way to endo a bike if it causes a lock up.

Also as I mentioned - you're quite possibly looking at the wheel hitting the radiator as well when the forks compress - a good way to end up with a hole in it.

How cheap? Because you can get some cheap adventure's. You will need longer forks and rear shock to get the extra travel. Then there's seating and fuel capacity as well. If you have access to cheap parts, like scouring ebay and swap meets and enjoy the challenge and don't mind a comprimised hybrid bike it might be fun. But if you calculate all the hours you will put into it, both research and labour. Plus the money you will spend, it may actually be more economical to use those hours working overtime and buy a nice Adventure.

There is a thread on here on a Super motard to SE conversion if you search for it, it may give you an idea of what your looking at.

The main problem will be with the rear shock. You can fit one from SE, but it only is marginally longer that the one from duke. It will give you half an inch of rear wheel height and you will gain another inch with a 18 wheel. However, if you put forks from an adventure + 21 front wheel, the front height will increase by probably much more than that.
It will be a fun project though to say the least and quite easy to check out.

So basically you need:
1) rear SE shock
2) a complete ADV front end (probably with restricted travel if there are clearance issues)
3) an ADV/SE swingarm and rear wheel

If it works you will end up with a more manic version of the SE. I say go for it!

Also, the gearing of the duke engine is not the same as the Adventure.

They are shorter and closer together. It will drive you nuts.
