Let's petition Garmin to bring back the 276/376 series

I'm not exactly sure there is such a thing as v1 and v2 for the units. I was early adopter and there were some screens failing about a year ago, Garmin overnighted me a new one... No problems in the last year with this new one. Lots of software updates since then too. If mine had as many troubles as people say they all do, I'd go back to something else, but mines rock solid.

I generally stay out of the big Montana thread so I'm not sure what guys are whining about these days.

Heading to DV right now, it's nice to have all the tracks from all my travels there last year loaded up without a concern for space.

Glad you like your Montana, but seriously it's just an upgraded hiking and exploring GPS with Google sat imagery. It's lacking the screen size and push button controlling (too many issues with touch screen at high speed). We're not trying to say that the Montana is a bad GPS,, what we're saying is take the best of the 276/376/478 series, which were very high performance, and still are and make them better. Maybe utilize some of the Montana farkles into it as well. A true racer/rallier/dirtbike GPS, must have a large screen, be push button or handlebar remote controlled to be truly effective at high speed in rough terrain. The Montana doesn't cut it for that.

I would like to see somebody use there gps at high speed on rough terrain, any gps. The bike and you are moving around so much that you can't take your hands off the bars let alone really see the screen at high speed. Just my opinion.

Come out to the KotW in 2013, you'll see quite a few Baja 1000 vets and at least three Dakar vets, among many other very accomplished desert racers/navigators doing it for four days straight. I'm sure you're capable as well if you really need to.

Tha's also why I suggest handlebar remote control like a rally trip computer/roll chart.

I don't think that is the point here. At least not in my case.

I've raced desert for many years and in rough terrain i'm not taking my hands off the bars to push a button on my gps. Mellow terrian no problem but not 70+mph over whoops and rocks and jumps. You use the gps during the in between moments of rough terrain riding. I do understand what you are saying about using the Montana and the 476 to make one great gps.

I would love simple voice commands, zoom in/out, pan R/L/up/down Heck I would even take a chin bar mounted, tongue operated joy stick.

in the new year i will be purchasing a Montana and i will post a full report on the Montana vs. 276 vs. 76.

i will always keep my 76 as a back up in my backpack just in case my 276 (or Montana) craps out on me.

the 76 is truly a perfect GPS but the screen size is way too small. that thing is bullet proof.

The units won't re-start until the temperature drops. That's a biggie that should be addressed.

In reality this would be an amazing accomplishment to get such a new device into production but likelyhood remote. Where are you in getting your foot in the door with Garmin?

Hard to form a solid opinion with no maps and when it's in the plastic map sleeve of your tank bag...

I don't really like my tank bag either, the plastic sleeve I like.

Got some maps for it (the plastic sleeve),have a good topo for GPS don't like the "reset all" button on almost every screen.

would be cool if you could turn off the touch screen.

the points you made are good, I just have to play with it more.

lately I try to follow the guys who think they know where there going. Or go where I know where I'm going.

What buttons do you push at 70 mph going over rough terrain?

The Montana sounds really good to me. I don’t need all its capabilities but it will likely be my next.

The touch screen on my Zumo is easy to use and works well. It has some buttons which I never use but I think it needs buttons to scroll the map. If it had those I would use them

My wife came equipped with all that. The joystick works fine up to at least 90+. Wait, what are we talking about?
