I think there are two back country byways, http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/surprise/valley.html The Barrel Springs is the one from Cedarville to Soldier Meadows. This might be the other one http://byways.org/explore/states/OR

Nice report and great pix! I've ridden a lot of those same areas, but haven't been through Soldier Meadows or Denio. I'm taking somebody up to High Rock Canyon in a week or two. I hope that water crossing is shallower by then. :)
