That was why I questioned it at the start, I've never heard anyone here
pronounce it "juana", ever.

Well, they are from Queretaro, so maybe they aren't as proficient as you gringos down Veracruz way.

The rule I follow is to pronounce it the way the locals mispronounce it. Works everywhere I travel. "Gua" at the beginning of a word can be pronounced at least three different ways and sometimes varies regionally for the same word. I've mostly heard Guanajuato pronounced with a silent G as the UA diphthong "wah", but occasionally with a hint of hard G.

Now X is a letter I hear pronounced with more variants than I can count. Largely due to the phonetics of indigenous languages like Nahuatl. MikeMike, how do the Veracruzanos pronounce our favorite convenience store, OXXO? Maybe not like the Chilangos do.

Someone want to take a shot at Cuautitlán-Izcalli?? Spanish phonetics don't apply to this one either.

Have been corrected recently for emphasizing the 2nd syllable in Queretaro, BTW, although I've never heard people from there pronounce it any other way.

I' ll go with the Televisa, TV Azteca pronunciation, thanks. You can' t trust regional pronunciations, if you did you' d mistake "Madonna" for McDonald' s and que hora son for corazon!

There are a lot of dialects here in SMA, mostly Northeastern USA... my Spanish is getting worse... will have to leave soon to get back into Mexico. Seriously though, this is a great place. Christmas here has been just amazing with the mercados filled with traditional foods and all kinds of Christmas decor, flowers, lights, shiny things and religious images. Blessings to all.

One of the coldest Christmases/New Years my wife and I ever spent was in SMA. The days were pretty nice but the nights were cold. Still enjoyed the place.
