No, it's a Gold Star 500 . . . a DBD34. The winningest motorcycle of all time. From the mid-30's to 1961 (the 1971 B50 "Gold Stars" don't count as real Goldies), the Gold star was road raced, dirt tracked, scrambled, trials . . . you name it, someone was racing either a 350 or a 500 Gold Star. Great bikes.

Besides racing with him back then, I got to go street riding with him a couple of times. We never went over the speed limit even once.

Agree, there seems to be some confusion between Grand Prix bikes and Superbikes.

That'd be Steve Martin, ex WSBK front runner, now commentator, and World Endurance champ. Lapping Phillip Island on a Katana, quick enough to qualify for last years moderns....

Mick Doohan won 2 WSBK races on this very bike, back in the day....

Robby Phillis. 3rd three times in WSBK Champs. Still doin it, on the exact same bike he won multiple Aus SBK Champs on. Back in the day..

Wayne Gardner. Pretty Quick.

Bootlace, thanks for the pics, especially the Katanas! I was visiting Melbourne in '97 when I drove to Broadford to see road racing. I saw Steve Martin lapping the field in local Superbikes and met Martin Hone, brother of Mick, who was racing Open singles, which I was running at the time. Awesome track for only bikes, I was in love! And I've been friends with Martin ever since.
