Just get some short 1/2 or so Kold Kutter screws and put 1 or 2 in each knob.
That should help out for trail riding, and be sort of, semi, kinda, OKish for some ice riding. Until you get to ride a set of Pro built tires.

I woudl think for trail use, you would want trelleborg type stud.
something carbide tipped would deal with rocks/dirt a lot better than the screws we are running on clean ice. We dont' take our tires off the ice and onto dirt. dulls the heads right away. I have been known to chew through forks and swingarms though

The Trelleborgs are awesome on snowy trails, and on snowy ice they will get you going, just not in any sort of style nor controllable fashion. Aerostich has these and I've read of people using them to good effect. Bottom line? Pick what you want to ride and realize there is no way to do it cheap.

I rode for two winters with my short screw setup. It may have not been the ideal setup, but it got me out riding. When there is a lot of snow on the ground I don't think it matters too much what kind of screws you have. The short screw method works good if you just want to keep your old half worn tires on and do some riding over the winter.
I even rode my bike a mile or so down the road to get onto the lake for some "ice riding". |

2-6 inches on Winnebagos south end depending where you drill. I'm going to give it another week yet.

True, ya got me on that one! I did drive to work today, in the snow, on a major interstate. Does that count?
