I got works suspension set up for a 250lb rider, so the rear suspension is really stiff, I only weigh 175lbs. it was awesome in the dirt until I blew my fork seals. I think I blew them on some really rough whoops.

You running the stock 43 sprocket? I find it's fine on the street but little too tall for offroad.

As for that picture Pete I found another one online



It's like a VF500 interceptor front end with a VT500 Ascot tail perched upon a swing arm front suspensioned tube frame.

This guy worked with Yamaha to make the GTS back in the day. Well the GTS was a huge turd and didn't sell well at all. After that roll of the dice it scared the pants off the Jap bike industry which they've stated are very reluctant to risk taking (big surprise). So after that you'd think this idea would be garbage but after reading the various articles I found and the feedback from the testers I feel that their may be hope for this design yet. Maybe the fork has seen it's day.

New XL600R Rebuild Thread

I've decided that my XL600 rebuild project probably deserves its own thread, so I can stop clogging up this thread with progress pictures!!

HERE is it.

I will post general progress updates and pictures over there in the new thread, and will continue to post questions and queries here. It seems to me that that's probably the way it should be.

As usual, many thanks to everyone here for all the help.
Hopefully, with the holidays now more-or-less behind us, I can get back to being a little more focused on the build.

just ordered all my goodies today

tires and tubes, battery. seat cover, chain, sprockets, fork and dust seals

I cant wait to get back in the dirt after these fork seals are fixed

anybody ever run Kenda K270s? how are they in the sand or dirt?

Hi guys!
I'm trying to install the crankshaft XL/XR600 in the XR500R and I need a little help with the measurements.
I have a few questions for the continuation of the movement further.
1. Which thickness (size) of the left crankcase a XL600? (from the main connectors to cover the stator)
2.What size (depth) in the cover the stator (of connectors up to supports the stator)?


I'm looking for 6 mm. written by Japanese engineers.
Who can help make these measurements?

Ivan, as near as I can tell with a tape measure, the left crankcase is 3 inches or maybe just a hair under.

I don't have a cover off at the moment to measure the other dimension for you. Hopefully someone else can.

Acerbis LED headlight

Anybody ever try one of these? Acerbis LED Vision HP Light kit [RS214421000. Wondering if it is a bunch better then stock lighting? Brighter light with fewer amps always ok!

This is good news, the thickness of the left crankcase XR500R = 75 mm.
I think 6 mm sitting in the stator cover.
I'm very waiting for confirmation from having the opportunity to measure the cover!

Mystery Carb Parts

There are two "tubes" on the carbs that are a bit mysterious to me. I'm hoping someone can help me figure out what to do with them....



A: If you blow air into this tube it comes out somewhere inside the main body of the carb. I have seen pictures of other bikes where this tube is just capped off with something like an automotive vacuum cap. Is that the right idea?

B: Air blown in here also comes out in the carb, actually from the little hole that's visible about an inch to the left of the red oval in this picture. However, I have no idea what to do with this one.

Christian, A as I recall, is an overflow and B is the float chambers vent. Best to leave them both open.

I never had K270 on frt, but have had one on rear for about 2 yrs now. Short ride to work and back almost everyday. A few rides in the woods also. I think they do pretty darn good in the woods for not being a true knobby. Also seems to be wearing like iron. It even has a few post work back parking lot burn outs on it, and still better then 50% Have not had it in sand yet.

Sorry about asking about the K270s

as it turns out, I'm already running them, They're so worn out I didn't notice the tread pattern! I should read the tire next time i get a new bike

I put some good ole' desert sand in the tank and shook it a bunch. I just got done rinsing all the sand out of it and next will be some rust remover. already looks alot better, but it wasn't that bad to begin with

Happy New Year Guys

Since I got the XL I've had intermittent starting problems and after replacing and sorting out quite a few of the porevious owners errors and lack of maintenance, it seemed to be getting better. I then noticed that the compression seemed to be really strong sometimes and hardly there on other occasions. I was thinking it may be a valve issue and the other week the bike died a few times on the way home and lost compression so took the AA for the rest of the way.
I dropped the engine out and yesterday i finally had the time to strip it down and here's what I found:



The intake valve seats seem to have sunk and one has broken up

You can see the amount of sinkage better on this one



Thankfully it looks like I haven't lost any of the seat into the barrel and the piston looks fine:



I've also checked over the cams, cam chain, sliders and Rockers and everything else looks fine, so, hopefully once I've got new valve seats and valves fitted all should be good. There's a local firm that specialise in working on older single cylinder bikes including Xls, so, thinking I'll get them to fit the seats and new valves and then I'll put it back together myself to keep the costs down.
Let me know if there's anything else worth doing while I'm at it?

If you've gone this far, l'd pull the cylinder and check it and the piston for wear. You don't want to get it all back together, only to find your compression is still dodgy. A new set of rings and a hone wouldnt cost much or go the whole hog and rebore and a new piston.
