After finally getting some time to look into where the fuel was leaking from I have the same issues with my pump flange.

Mike expect a call in the next couple of days!

I also did go ahead an file a NHSTA complaint to add another one to their records since this does need to be taken care of.

I ordered the special clamp and installed it on my '05 last weekend. It was easy to access and seems to be the right tool for the job. Mine had not developed any cracks yet - but I store it outside in Michigan. I'm worried that if any tank will crack, it would be mine. I feel a bit better with the gadget in place.

Has anyone heard if BMW has issued a formal recall on this issue? I noticed this on a recent(ish) WSJ article and it looks like there might be some movement towards BMW taking some responsbility for this. I'd be interested to hear if any dealers have any additional info.

On a GS take off the left large side cover and the black dome cover on the fuel pump. Look for cracks like this:

PS I doubt BMW will issue a recall for this. There have been many cracks, but few dangerpur leaks. My 120K mile GS has huge cracks, but is not yet leaking. I will be fixing it anyhow.

Pull the black plastic side panels number #1.


On the left side, remove the fuel pump cover at the top. Should be able to see what you're looking for. Mine's been cracked for a while but I think I'll be taking some precautionary measures before it leaves me stranded on some dirt road. We got to get together for a ride or two once all this snow goes away.

I didn't take off anything, I just used a streamlight and looked. If you can take a picture, the image will show the cracks better than you can see with your naked eye. However, taking the panel off will give you a much better view all the way around. Once I saw the cracks on mine I figured there was no need to take the panel off, just needed to make arrangements with the dealer for the repair.

Since it is out of warranty the repair is going to cost you big!

Why don't you get the BBY clamp and save a bunch of money?

My repair was under warranty, unfortunately the dealer used the old style parts not the new and improved so I am going to order the beemerboneyard clamps as I suspect the new clamp will eventually crack.

I probably will. MOST are cracked, most won't leak if not messed with too much.

For all, if it is cracked, clamp it!

My 120K mile GS is cracked on both sides, pump and return sides, but does not leak, yet. Still has the original QDs on it too. Not for long.

That's what I used. A hose clamp offers way more force than necessary to keep the flange from expanding/cracking, I just lightly snugged the screw up so I can still spin the clamp when turning it hard. I did have to partially cut the top half of the clamp to clear the quick disconnect release, but $1 sure beats $30.

The force from a cheap hose clamp is not equally distributed, but if it works for you...
