Honda XR400

Seasons Greetings Kiwi ADV riders. I used to do the odd trail ride with my Son, started off with a KDX 200 and he had a XR 80, 100,200 and then I bought a 1997 XR 400 with the plan to do some more trail riding....well that was 2 years ago and the old XR has done one lap of the block...
Its road legal but following a bit of internet research I picked up some 'XR 600' ones on TM that had good rubber on them.....by all accounts ' a bolt on"......
As usual scope creep set in....rear wheel came off.....hmmm may as well lube the suspension.....having read all the horrors of the swing arm bolt on ADV rider I thought it was a give it would be seized.....well no it wasn't tapped thru easily....
Lubed it all up and the rear wheel bolted right up using the old spacers, the caliper was however seized....... ( puts to one side)
Took off the front wheel and removed the disc.....oh dear.....it doesn't fit..... its 240 in diameter which according to the innernet......fits from 250-600....bolt holes are smaller.
futher googling and I'm thinking it may have had a 250 wheel fitted.....
Oh well.....at this stage I'll just swap over the tyre....
Anyone confirm my theory?

is there some info missing??? did you pick up some wheels or another bike?

Do ya reckon the forks would fit in a airhead?

Original wheels are D/S tyres and the 'new' set are MX ( i'm up with the jargon)

Well swapped over the front tyre using the old time method of tyre irons and swearing

Thats when scope creep set in...... " I wonder when the fork oil was changed.....if ever"

Did a Google search....nearly every post said to buy a manual...oh well....how hard can it be....what can possibly go

wrong.....

Got the fork legs off and read something about keeping the settings of the rebound thingy.......

Drained out the oil.....it started off blue and then go progressively blacker and lumpy.

Gave them a clean out with some orphan fork oil, refilled to 116 of the top and bunged them back together.

whew.....I need a beer...

Next the freekin brakes....

Freekin brakes.... stripped them cleaned up the pistons, lubed the seals with brake lube, reassembled and bled.
Fitted the tank and seat ready for the test ride.....
Started it up, no rattles, nice and quiet...
Well its been a while and the XR400 is a tall bike.....eek....
Tip toes to start the thaaang.
Ah bugger that......enough of that for the day.....

Went down to Supercheap to get a spark plug tool to reach the hidden plug......nuffin.....Repco......bought a long socket but too fat to fit in well...... Damn you Honda and your fancy pants OHC 4 valve head......
then suddenly.... ( more like this actually ...)

" you said you were going to paint the house over the Xmas.New Year".....

Boxabitch has some secret tricks to avoid holiday house painting etc. You just need to know someone with a quality bike that has nice strong handlebars....

18mm plug according to the net..... there are threads on the plug tool.....

fortunately I had a desperate for cash varsity student son home over the holiday period so I never had to touch a paint brush.

you can tell which half he painted first but everything has is disadvantages....

I got 'the lads' doing the landscaping .....digging out stumps and moving dirt.....

My GB 650 mate came around today with " the Honda Tool"

He came, lent me the tool.......then took the tool with him.......strange these Honda owners......fancy a ride on his repowered

GB 400 though....

Undid the ringie things on the shock and can now touch the ground.......

think I'll look at the tappets next and carb......

Stuffed after spending all day in the sun painting.......

Did he bore out the GB or put a XR motor in? I was thinking about boring out my GB 400 but everyone I talked to just said "Buy a faster bike & leave it as it is"
Sounds like that Honda owner has seen your workshop full of mismatched tools before
