Red Rock isn't the problem. It's the sand mostly.
In regards to the TR650, it's just not a very heavy duty bike. Appealing? Yes, for several reasons.
I'm sure there will be a few on the ride next year.

The sand was a breeze, Red Rock gave me some problem

Laugh

It doesn't seem to matter what you ride, Red Rock can be a problem. Whether your bike is a Husky TR650 or a lighter KTM, it seems like you can be passed by the best of them.

I remember this funny LA-B-to-V quote I put in the Jan/Feb 2012 newsletter a year ago:

Greg from Visalia: Talking to a fellow DRZ rider at the finish, I asked how he did through Red Rock Canyon at the rock crossing. He said, "Went through it, no problem. Must have gone by about $100,000 worth of KTM's.”

See what I mean?

I ride that area on a regular basis and to my suprise i found it to be the easiest on my TTR125 compared to my 450, 640 or 1200....

was able to smoke right through it on my dr650. passed only maybe 20,000 in ktms. well actually maybe like 35,000 there was a 990 adv sitting on the other side of the rock section

the problem i dealt with was hitting the whoops on that pig of a bike with the stock "suspension" or lack there of. if i make it out next year i will be on the 250x.
