agree...
dont even buy a gps...the $ you spend on it will take you across and most of the way back. just a few paper maps in the tank bag vs batteries or power supply and button pushing WHEN you should be hanging on, looking and steering. oh, and no one will ever steal your map!
and really, stopping for gas or for other reasons can be a time to ask directions (but are you really going off the hwys that far?) or confirm local sights (if the map doesnt make things clear enough).

Camp in the bush, avoid regulated campgrounds with fees and RVs. Wash in the river or the lakes. Make coffee in the morning and drink it while you pack up. Stop in a couple of hours at a greasy spoon for breakfast and meet the locals. Buy food and booze mid-afternoon for the night and start looking for a great spot to camp a couple of hours before dark. Set up, get a fire going, cook a spectacular meal. Eat, drink (or whatever), and enjoy the peace and quiet. A sleep in a tent with a good thermarest and sleeping bag will be the best rest ever. Use back-packing gear, light and good quality. I'm well over 60 now and motels only hold my attention when it's pissing down.
