GS too big for Superstition in So Cal?
Heading out there with some buds in a few weeks and trying to decide if I should take the GS 1200 or the XR650. Anyone with first hand experience?

Depends on what you want to do. Definitely the XR if you want to ride hard. I had my KTM 990R out there over New Year's and had plenty of fun but there were some places I just couldn't keep up with the smaller guys; mainly skill related not bike. I still managed to wow a lot of people with the places I did go. There has been quite a bit of rain and it has packed down the main riding area really well. If you want to test the handling limits of the GS in sand and whoops and are okay with riding the main area, take the GS. If you want to run the washes for a day trip definitely XR

Had the XR400 out there a couple of weeks ago...you'll have a blast on the smaller bike. I can remember saying to myself..."crap I'm glad I didn't bring the GS"!

Ha! I want to trade my XR650 for an XR400 or DRZ400. Ok, no dice on the GS!
