Can you sink an axe into it and have it stick, and how much moisture comes out at the edge of impact?

...this was a quick thirty minutes with one of my splitting axes;

Granted, these were blocks that I cut short in order to load the stove north-south.

...which actually surprised me. Splitting axe takes a few swings to get a fracture started, then it's going pretty well.

I doubt that the larger blocks will split by hand though. Boy, am I ever out of shape! (well, round is a shape

)

Tha Rick thinks it is poplar. Says it will need a good amount of time to dry but not as troublesome as cottonwood.

Oh man, I love splitting wood. There few things in life as satisfying. If I lived closer, I'd come over and do it for free.

From the looks of it, your axe is kind of a lightweight for the work at hand. You might want to consider a splitting maul (sledgehammer / axe combo). The extra weight really helps.

Looks like you got a load of elm there.

Those large rounds look pretty good too. Bunch of it around the front range, not much in my neighborhood though.

There's got to be some wood turners out there that would just wet themselves if they saw you burning that.

My Dad always said that wood warms you thrice ......... once cutting it, once splitting it, and once more burning it!

Grew up with wood stove and coal stove, and cutting up firewood all Summer for Fall and Winter. Natural gas is so much easier, and the little to nothing I pay is more than worth it IMHO

Still gotta have firewood for camping though.

You live in the city, I'm taking a gueiss. Propane delivered in winter, when they have to chain up to deliver get's a bit spendy.

Since Grizgirl bought a pellet stove, we've kept the house real comfy with that and the wood insert, and I have yet to light the pilot on the furnace.

Can someone tell me why some places have bans on burning cottonwood? it was mentioned earlier in the thread.

Dude.. injuries from manual wood splitting actually earn you extra mancard bronze stars (blood or missing digits bump up to sliver).
