Dakar.com
With a time of 49'25", France's David Casteu still leads the provisional standings on the special stage at the half-way point. He leads his countryman Olivier Pain by 1'34", Helder Rodrigues by 2'14", Ruben Faria by 3'45", Gérard Farres Guell by 3'47" and Joan Barreda Bort by 6'13". Only these six competitors have so far completed 67 km of the stage.

Barreda's stage position moves farther and farther down as each new rider clocks in at WP2

I don't think that was a good tactical plan.

It doesn't work that way with staged starts, though. Casteu started 4' behind Barreda, so even if/when he catches back up, he'll still be losing time on the day.
If navigating the piste opening was slowing him down (which is inevitably was), that's fine, just slip time until the others arrive. But there's no sense at all in intentionally going astray. If he want's to graduate to Alien, he'll have to be able to win from the front as Coma and Despres have in the past. The only way to do that, is to do it. :huntedlikeadog

the thing with these short stages is he can lose a lot of places without losing too much time, meaning he can start way back tomorrow and go barreda crazy!

DAKAR BIKES UPDATE STAGE 5
After 53 km, Joan Barreda Bort took a route too far to the north before returning to the main tracks, a slight mistake that only lasted for a half dozen kilometres, enabling him to abandon the duties of opening the road, which is now the responsibility of David Casteu and Olivier Pain... Breauxman
