Train, bus, tuk tuk, etc BK to PP
Guys,
Here is a terrific site and primer on how to get from BK to PP by train, Bus, taxi tuk tuk, etc. http://www.seat61.com/Cambodia.htm#Siem Reap The new bus service seems like a terrific way to go. Would like to find out if it is actually running and where/how to get reservation on it. According to the website above it will take about a 1 1/2 days to get to PP from BK using the existing services. If I had more time it would be a great option. I have to delay my departure from the US due to a surgery scheduled for my dog. I will be leving on the 17th and arrive late the 18th. As such I will have to transit directly to PP upon arrival in BK. Since I am ariving late I am looking at flying to PP. It is only $95 and gets there the same day in about an hour. But this "new" bus would be a great option if it pans out. Ken, it seems you will be a day or so ahead of me so message me if you take this bus and arrive in one piece .Upon arrival in PP I am renting a bike so I will not need to "buy" a bike when I get there. But I would like to accompany some of you, look over yor shoulders and offer unsolicited buying advice!!

Dan and Ken, glad youse guys have chimed in. The more, the merrier.
Train/bus/plane, it's all'a same to me 'long as we get to PP in time to buy our bikes. Extra time after the Cam ride can/will be split up as appropriate. Wanna see some Thai and Laos if possible. Chiang Mai is for sure on my short list. Larry and Danny are staying longer, Dace shorter. I hope to ride as much as possible so renting in Thai is also on my short list. I don't want to carry a helmet around for days and weeks. I don't have an unlocked phone yet. My Nokia 2610s have to be reflashed and I didn't find anyone local to do it. My i-phone 3 is in process of getting unlocked, waiting to hear back from AT&T. All else is looking good. Got my maps today (3 for areas in Northern Thailand around Chiang Mai and a full Laos map.) My "GPS" (Open Source Map on my Samsung with full maps for all three countries) works pretty good too. So I doubt we'll get lost. I have an 0-dark-thirty departure out'a 'Vegas on Monday the 14th. LA-Tokyo-Bangkok arriving afternoon of the 15th local. See y'all there.

Register with the State Dept
Don't know if any of you have done this but I figure it can't hurt to let the State Dept know approximately where I'll be and when.
You can register here: Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/t...tion_4789.html I'm in the process of getting organized and beginning my packing today. See all of you FFs soon!

Safety tips for riding in SE Asia
Just read an excellent thread on riding in SE Asia. It doesn't sound a whole lot different than riding in Latin America for those of you who have ridden there. But, my feeling is you can never be TOO concerned about safety and life is a constant learning/re-learning experience. Even at my advanced age I'm willing to admit I don't know it all!

Thanks for posting the various links, folks. I've read a bunch of RideAsia info, I feel the same, kind'a like Central America. I've ridden and driven in Boston and Detroit so SEA holds little fear for me ('cept for wrong-side-of-the road.)
