Great idea. Reminds me of the 'wind screens' on the ole Coleman stoves.

I also use a 1550 and have Varios.

Going to look into designing something like yours/other one that utilizes the Vario as the support on the bottom. (You used an additional ABS plate).
Martillo...do have any 'patterns' that you used?

That is...mine would mount to the right side...with the back attached to the RotoPax.
Might even utilize the 1-gallon RotoPax handle as part of the securing???

Mine. Cut the top off a cheap 13/16" socket. Small and free with junk tools everywhere.

Was the outside of that socket not round?

I never get rid of old tools. I may upgrade tools, but I always keep the old ones. You never know when some Southern Engineering will be called for.

I was tired of looking for the right angle that didn't exist to get rid of the buffeting. I cut the shape, heated it with a heat gun to get the curves right. Result, it's quiet, and NO buffeting! Visibility is only reduced a little because I gave it that satin finish.

The top of most spark plug sockets comes with a place to use a standard wrench. The 13/16" comes with a perfect 22mm wrench head on top.

I just pull the foam out of the socket and put an extension in backwards or where the spark plug would go. No tools are harmed.

An M14 coupling nut is even easier, no mfg. required.
And if you want to get fancy drill a 9/32" hole in one end so a screwdriver shaft can go thru it.

I did that originally, but my cheap socket wasn't cut to allow the socket to be attached backwards, so I had to do this:

Do you only flip that plexi gaurd up and cober the light when you are off road or do you leave it up normally?

If up does it cause any refraction of the light and distort the focus at all?

Most, obviously not all, but most cheap spark plug sockets have the hex on the end and are cut thru for the 3/8" backwards extension trick.

Almost every cheap tool kit has one of those in it.
On my boat tool kit I bought the 5/8" spark plug socket wa too thick to fit into the water manifolds to remove the sprkplugs on the 5.7 liter Chevy Mercruiser. I had to take a grinder and thin the bottom inch down and then be careful removing and torquing plugs in so as not to crack it. I do not have a lathe to turn a scket down.

Cutting off the end of a cheapo plug socket is no big loss, it is not "harming a tool" it is merely "repurposing" a tool....recycle. Finding one that will fit backwards on an extension is a better idea though because then you have a spark plug socket as well. Some need to be turned down to fit the BMW head like my boat did. Remeber to give it a quick shot of paint to prevent rust if you turn one down.

Nice job, I like the DIY stuff that looks factory. I'd suggest a little rubber stick-on bumper or two at the potential contact point(s) at the top to prevent vibration noise should the wind push it backwards.

Also, did it have a noticeable effect on the wind entering under the bottom edge of the windshield? More buffeting?

Where do you get an M14 coupling nut at? I went to my local Ace hardware and they only had SAE style and not the larger version. Also, the large spark plug socket made by Husky does not allow for the reverse socket drive trick since it has a circular hole on the inside not the standard 3/8 inch square socket fitting..
